REPORT
This will be my last “Nisa Midweek Open” match report for the matches on Lake Two at Makins Fishery. I am very grateful to the magnificent support I have had over the years from the Fishery (various owners), the hundreds of anglers (from all over Europe) who have fished the matches, and especially those who have helped on the day with the scales. Thank you all, I have enjoyed every minute, and I wish everyone the best for the future. I have now handed everything over to Gaz Kitch, who will lead from next week (8th July).

It was great to be able to end with yet another “sell out”, with many anglers from past years turning out and filling the gaps left by regulars who had other commitments. Even Bagga Hunt made the 120-mile trip from Maplethorpe (even better as we drew next to each other)!

Back to business – the payout was as usual, to the overall winner and then defaulting to the top two on each bank (A and B). The weather was excellent, warm (not too hot), sunny with a little cloud, and a cooling NW breeze, which put a decent ripple on the water (and ensured that the high numbered pegs fished well). It was extremely tight at the top, with only 4 lbs and 2 oz splitting the top five weights, leaving all framers ruing lost fish. There were some DNWs (obviously getting away early to watch the football), but this week I have shown all the weighers, which I don’t expect Gaz to do (top 6 and prize winners should be ample).

Tony Brookes sat on peg A18. Facing the wind, he gave us another demonstration of the effectiveness of his sinking float, by sneaking out 87-02 for the overall win. Tony caught decent carp in “fits and starts” throughout the day.

On B17, Gaz Woods, on a rare appearance on Phase One, thought he was in trouble after he lost both of his method feeders soon after the start. He switched to a pellet waggler, ending the match with 86-07 for second overall, to win the B bank pool.

This edged Gaz Kitch (B24) into third place overall and second on the B bank. Gaz caught in the early stages on the method feeder cast towards the island, and in the last two hours on the pole and paste fished in his margin, where the wind had blown surface scum. He ended with 85-10.

Back on the A bank, John Adamson on A14 caught all his fish (4 bream, an F1 and mainly decent carp) except for a single bream on pole and paste, on the method feeder, fishing tight to the island. His 84-05 final tally was fourth overall and won the A bank pool, just ahead of Jordan Nelson on A16 (fifth overall and taking second on the A bank), whose 82-14 was caught on method feeder and pellet waggler early on, and then on the pole from his right margin in the latter stages.

Just missing out (with weights over 50 lbs) were sixth overall Dean Hall (peg A2), whose 64-09 all fell to the method feeder, and Pete Stockwin (A20), who fished similarly for his 55-01 for seventh place.

My thanks to everyone who assisted with the scales and lifting at the weigh-in, especially Tony Brookes and Gaz Wood. Photos are of the successful anglers.

NB. Nisa Opens are held most Wednesdays on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).

30/06/2026

Still one space now left for tomorrow on Lake Two. - Just had another drop out.

29/06/2026

Sorry for the short notice, but this Wednesday will be my last Nisa Midweek Open at Makins Fishery, after which I will pack up my tackle ready for pastures new.

I wish to thank everyone at the Fishery for their support, and to everyone who has fished my matches at the Fishery over the last 20+ years, many thanks for your support and assistance. When I do actually move (not long now), I will miss you all.

It is planned that the Wednesday matches on Lake Two will continue, with Gaz Kitch taking the lead. Please help him out when you can, as there will be some weeks he cannot make it.

My best wishes to everyone.

REPORT
Attendance was well below normal due to hospital appointments, holidays, other commitments and several anglers opting not to face the heat. Their decision was understandable: conditions were blisteringly hot, with very little wind, making fishing uncomfortable. However, the payout remained unchanged, going to the overall winner and, by default, the top two weights on each bank.

Gavin James returned after a few weeks away and carried on where he left off, producing another excellent display of waggler “mugging”. From peg B2, he cast pellets to cruising carp and caught steadily throughout the day, finishing with 126-08 to win the match.

On peg A10, Tony Brookes used his slow sinker to good effect, catching quality carp for 107-00. This placed him second overall and first on the A bank.

On peg B20, Craig Middleton, fishing his first Nisa Wednesday Open, also enjoyed a good day’s sport. By switching methods throughout the match, he finished with 86-02 for third overall and won the B bank.

John Lack, on peg A6, fished bomb and pellet for quality carp, weighing 82-03 to finish fourth overall and second on the A bank. His result edged Tony Lamb on peg A19, who fished pole and pellet, out of the money. Tony finished fifth overall with 63-04.

Dean Hall, on B22, caught carp on the method feeder and added bream on the pole to weigh 46-00. This earned him sixth place overall and the final payout, second on the B bank. He finished ahead of John Adamson, who weighed 39-01 from B14 after catching carp on the method feeder and three close-in bream on pole and paste.

The final angler to weigh in was Rob Lowe on peg A16. He caught late on pole and paste to finish with 37-10, while several others were more focused on escaping the sun than weighing their catches.

Many thanks to Tony, Rob and Gav for helping with the scales and weigh-in. The top anglers are shown in the photos.

I would also like to thank Makins’ bailiff Shane Sayers, who came to my rescue and retrieved my rod and reel from near the island after a small carp had dragged it in. His help was above and beyond the call of duty and was greatly appreciated.

NB. Nisa Opens are held most Wednesdays on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).

23/06/2026

1/. CHANGE OF MATCH TIMES FOR 24 JUNE
2/. CHANGE OF NET LIMIT FOR TOMORROW ONLY.

1/. As the Fishery has reduced matches to a 5 hour maximum, the times tomorrow are adjusted as follows:
PAY IN: Before 9:50 am
DRAW: 10 AM
FISHING: 12 noon to 5 pm.

2/. Due to the heat, I am reducing the net limit from 60 to 50 lbs. Any weight over 50 and up to 60 lbs will be knocked back to 50 lbs. Over 60 lbs and the net will not count.

Sorry for any inconvenience. Both measures are for fish welfare. When temperatures drop we will return to our normal rules.
