If you feel unstable or weak in your hips, try this daily exercise...

It strengthens both hips at the same time, but in two very different ways.

One hip has to stabilise and support your body weight while the other works through its full range, strengthening the hip flexors, inner thigh, glute med and glute max.

This replicates what our hips need to do when we walk... one side stabilises us while the other moves the leg.

Building strength this way can improve hip mobility, balance and stability and give you more control with every step.

Weak glutes can affect far more than just your hips…

Strong glutes help support our hips, improve balance and give us more stability and control when we walk.

Tomorrow I’m posting a simple glute strengthening routine designed to work all areas of the glutes.

Check back tomorrow for the routine.

Knee pain or weakness? Avoiding load could be making it weaker.

When we have a problem with one knee, we naturally start taking weight away from it. But over time, that can reduce the strength of the muscles that help support and stabilise the knee.

This simple exercise starts to gradually challenge that load again, strengthening around the knee while also working the foot, ankle and hip all important for controlling and supporting the leg when we walk.

This is the third exercise in my knee support videos this week ... so have a scroll back at the previous two if you missed them

Knee pain when you walk?

Sometimes the problem isn’t just the knee itself. Losing mobility and strength in the structures that support the knee can change how it moves and handles load with every step.

I’ve already posted two simple exercises this week to help work on this, so have a look back if you missed them.

The third and final exercise is coming tomorrow.

Knee friendly exercise Part 2

If you experience pain below or around your knee when you’re walking, it could be because you’ve lost some of the movement and strength that helps support the knee with every step.

This simple exercise works on restoring that movement while strengthening the muscles that help control and support it.

Knee pain when you walk?

If your knee is missing these two small movements, it can create extra strain through the joint with every step, leading to pain, stiffness and discomfort.

This simple exercise helps get that movement back.

This is part one of three. Check back tomorrow for part two when we start strengthening the structure that supports the knee.

Bone-on-bone or painful knees doesn't mean you should avoid exercises that add load to the knee joint.

The muscles and other tissues around your knees help support and stabilise the joint so it can tolerate load. Walking, standing up from a chair and climbing the stairs all place load through the knee joint.

Strengthening the muscles around your knees, and working on your hips and ankles, helps your body manage those loads better

If you avoid knee load altogether it will end up where the muscles supporting your knees become weaker and your knee less supported

For the next 3 days I'll be adding a simple exercises for painful knees, save them and share them when they’re posted.

If you’re starting to shuffle when you walk, this could be why…

We often think about lifting our feet, but every step also requires enough strength to hike the hip and help clear the leg from the ground.

If that movement has become weak, your steps can become shorter and your feet may start to shuffle.

Try this simple exercise to strengthen it.

If your balance isn’t as good as it used to be, simply standing still won’t improve it.

Your balance needs to be challenged to get better. These three simple progressions test your stability and teach your body to react when you start to wobble.

How far can you progress while staying in control?

If you’re struggling with your balance, simply practising standing still isn’t enough to improve it.

Balance is a reactive skill. Your brain is constantly processing information from your eyes, inner ear and sensory receptors in your muscles, joints and feet to work out where your body is in space.

When we deliberately challenge our stability, we force that system to respond. Small changes in our centre of gravity make the muscles around our feet, ankles, hips and core react and make constant tiny corrections to stop us from losing our balance.

That’s how we train balance: not by avoiding the wobble, but by teaching our body how to respond to it.

Tomorrow morning, I’m posting a video with three simple balance challenges you can do while you’re waiting for your coffee to brew.

It will be posted in the morning or if comment below I'll reply with the link once it's posted
