Commonwealth Games ๐Ÿ† | Alongside the success of our Nottingham linked athletes, a number of University of Nottingham staff played crucial roles behind the action at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer.

During the games, Matthew Nicholson, Head of Performance Integration at the University of Nottingham, and Dr. Andrew Butterworth, the university's Head of Applied Performance & Associate Professor in Sport Performance, supported teams and elite athletes throughout the Games with advanced performance reports, analysis and insight.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "Watching people I knew and had worked with over a number of years competing at the highest level gave me a real sense of pride in the role that Nottingham can play in supporting athletes throughout their sporting journey."

โ„น๏ธ We caught up with both of them recently to find out more about their roles, as well as the experience of working 'behind the scenes' at the prestigious sporting event this summer, and you can read our full conversation here; nottingham.ac.uk/sport/news ๐Ÿ”—

Red Roses x UoN Sport ๐Ÿ‰ | We were proud to welcome England Rugby's Red Roses to the University of Nottingham for part of their preparations ahead of a big set of fixtures this month. Using our world-class sports and rehabilitation facilities at David Ross Sports Village, the squad brought the highest level of rugby right onto campus ๐Ÿ”ฅ

During the camp, we spoke to our Women's Rugby head coach Tim Westwood as well as 25/26 club president and 26/27 Student's Union VP Sport Jasmine Murray about the impact of having the reigning World Champions on campus.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "If you can see it, you can be it. It's so inspiring to see players of that standard in our facilities and around campus."

๐Ÿ‘ | UoN Shooting had an exceptional year in British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition in 25/26, with the team delivering one of the clubs best performances in their history at the Clay Pigeon Shooting Championships earlier this year, and more recently added a silver medal at the Full Bore Championships in the summer ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ’ฌ "The club is immensely proud of our members in both competing in and medalling at BUCS 25/26. A true testament to the effort and grit shown throughout the year both from novice and experienced members. We are going into the new year and we will be working hard to ensure we can repeat our successes at BUCS!"

In Clay Pigeon, the club won ๐Ÿฅˆ in the Men's team competition, whilst Ted Pepper won ๐Ÿฅ‡ in the Men's Individual event, and James Burch won Men's Individual ๐Ÿฅˆ at the Full Bore.

BUCS Award ๐Ÿ† | The University of Nottingham was named the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award winner at the 2026 British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Awards this summer, and we recently spoke to the team who deliver our programmes to find out more.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "We're obviously really chuffed to win the award, but we have got a really great team at the university. We aim to give disabled students the confidence to come here because they know that they'll have a positive experience and actually sport can be a place for them and a place where they can belong and find a community." ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ›ถ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ† | University of Nottingham sport scholar Amy Green has had a very busy but hugely successful summer of competition, winning two ๐Ÿฅˆ medals alongside graduating with a first class in Sport and Exercise Science BSc with Hons!

Amy won a silver medal in the Women's K1 200m at the Under-23 World Championships, and followed up with another silver in the K1 200m at the University World Championships, all before also competing at her first senior World Championships ๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿ’ฌ Reflecting on her summer, Amy said "Iโ€™m very happy with this season. To finish the season being U23 and University Vice World Champion in K1 200m and 13th in the same event at the Senior World Championships is incredible. Alongside this I also attained a first-class degree. Being able to split the last year of my degree enabled me to really commit to both training and my degree and it has paid off."

Congratulations Amy! ๐Ÿ‘
