Good luck to this boy as he flies out to Las Vegas to compete at the Masters Worlds. I can’t make it this year, but I’ll be there next year. Wish them all the best— all the work is done now. Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas 😂

WHY WE LIKE TO SEE OUR KIDS COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER:

Competing during everyday Jiu-Jitsu training isn’t about beating a teammate—it’s about using real resistance as a mirror for personal growth.
Here is why competitive pressure during training is essential for kids, both on the mats and off:

•Simulates Real-Life Stress (In a Safe Place): Uncontested drill work is easy because there is no pressure. Competition injects real, unpredictable stress. When a training partner pushes back hard, kids learn to quiet the noise in their head, control their breathing, and keep their composure under fire.

•Forces Authentic Problem-Solving: If a partner lets them win, a child never actually tests if a technique works. True competitive resistance forces kids to analyze why a move failed, adjust their strategy instantly, and try again without getting emotional.

•Builds High-Level Adaptability: In the real world, things rarely go according to plan. Competitive spar rounds train kids to react to sudden changes, think on their feet, and pivot when their first plan fails.

•Eliminates the Fear of Mistakes: When sparring gets competitive, kids will tap out—frequently. Facing small failures every single class desensitizes them to the fear of making mistakes. They stop seeing failure as embarrassing and start seeing it as necessary feedback to get better.

•Teaches Mutual Respect & Teamwork: Iron sharpens iron. When kids push each other hard in training, they realize their training partners are the ones making them stronger. It creates a deep bond built on shared struggle and mutual elevation.

Training with competitive intent transforms martial arts from mere mechanical movement into a living lab for real-world grit.
