When choosing an after-school activity for your child, what matters most?
The one that’s closest to home?
Or…
The one that’s right for your child?
Let’s face it — family life is busy.
School runs. Work. Homework. Dinner. Clubs. Trying to remember who needs to be where and at what time!
So naturally, when we’re looking for an after-school activity, convenience can play a big part in our decision.
“There’s one just around the corner.”
“That one’s only five minutes away.”
And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with considering convenience.
But should it be the deciding factor?
Whether it’s martial arts, gymnastics, dance, football, swimming, music, drama or another activity, you’re choosing more than something to fill an hour after school.
You’re choosing people and an environment that could become an important part of your child’s life.
So perhaps there are a few other questions worth asking…
✓ Are the coaches or instructors experienced and professional?
✓ Does my child feel welcome and included?
✓ Is it a positive and encouraging environment?
✓ Will they be challenged while still enjoying themselves?
✓ Will they have opportunities to develop confidence and independence?
✓ Are they learning skills and values as well as the activity itself?
✓ Can I see my child still enjoying being here a year or two from now?
And perhaps most importantly…
Do the people teaching my child genuinely care about their development?
Because sometimes the closest option isn’t necessarily the right option
An extra 10 or 15 minutes in the car might seem inconvenient at first.
But if that journey takes your child somewhere they feel they belong…
Somewhere they make friends.
Somewhere they become more confident.
Somewhere they’re encouraged when things are difficult.
Somewhere they learn that improvement comes from practice and perseverance.
And somewhere they can’t wait to go back to next week…
Those extra few minutes can suddenly feel very worthwhile.
So perhaps when choosing your child’s next activity, don’t just ask:
“Which one is closest?”
Ask:
“Which one would I choose for my child if distance wasn’t the deciding factor?”
And if martial arts is something you’re considering…
