Match Day

4 September 2006. Two young Gunners went out on patrol in Iraq. They never came home.

Twenty years later, their names still deserve to be spoken.

Gunner Stephen “Trigger” Wright was only 20. Born in Preston and raised in Leyland, he had wanted an Army career from an early age. He joined at just 16, embraced military life completely, and found a second family in 58 (Eyre’s) Battery, Royal Artillery.

Quiet by nature, Stephen was known for his infectious smile and his sense of humour. When times were difficult, he was often the man who lifted those around him. He had been selected for a promotion course and was looking forward to a long career in the Royal Artillery.

His family remembered a happy young man who loved being with his friends and grandparents. The Army was not simply a job to Stephen. It was what he had always wanted to do.

Gunner Samuela “Sammy” Vanua was 27. Born in Fiji, he joined the British Army in 2002 and became known as a tough, hardworking and deeply dependable soldier.

But there was much more to Sammy than his reputation as a Gunner. He was a gifted rugby player who represented British Army Germany and played an important role in his Regiment’s successes. His cheeky grin and mischievous humour made him hugely popular with those around him.

He was also the soldier younger men could turn to, always willing to share the experience he had gained over years of demanding service.

On 4 September 2006, Stephen and Sammy were returning from a task supporting the training of Iraqi Police when their patrol was struck by a roadside bomb near Ad Dayr, north of Basra.

Both men died from their injuries.

Stephen was 20. Sammy was 27.

Two soldiers. Two families. Two lives filled with friendships, hopes and futures that would never be completed.

Stephen was looking forward to continuing his Army career.

Sammy had the potential for many more years of service.

Neither got the chance.

Today, we remember them not simply as soldiers who died in Iraq, but as the young men they were before that final patrol.
