Fabulous family kayak tour today at low tide through the dorns. Such a fantastic time to find underwater sea creatures amongst the kelp beds. Today we found sea urchins and starfish.
Some facts about Sea Urchins;
Sea urchins are spiny marine invertebrates belonging to the class Echinoidea. They inhabit every ocean globally and use suction-cupped tube feet to crawl along the seabed. Prized as a delicacy known as uni in sushi, these omnivores feed on algae using a unique, five-toothed jaw called “Aristotle’s lantern” which is so strong it can scrape rock. They primarily eat algae and kelp and can reportedly live for over 100 years!
Some facts about Starfish
Starfish do not have a brain or blood. Instead, they pump filtered seawater through their bodies to circulate nutrients and oxygen. While many starfish have five arms, some species can have up to 40 arms. At the tip of each arm is a simple eye spot that detects light and dark. They eat animals like mussels, clams, oysters, and small fish. When eating, a starfish extends its own stomach outside its body, digests its prey externally, and then retracts the stomach back inside to finish the process. Starfish can regenerate lost limbs. In many species, if a lost arm contains a portion of the central disc, it can grow into an entirely new starfish.
