“From Your Front Door” is new series of posts where we’ll look at the joys of walking from the humbler landscapes accessible from our front door. The mountains and moorlands link us to nature in the wildest places but connecting through the ‘unremarkable’ can be equally enlivening when we remove the assumption that one is spectacular and other isn’t.
Writer and Explorer, Francis Sanzaro, puts it like this: “My strolls taught me that walking truly is a discipline and an art. The discipline of removing assumption — thinking that something is going to be beautiful does as much damage to a place as thinking it will be ugly”
We should leverage the gift of walking to stop thinking and pay attention to the stuff of the place, in other words, the place itself.

Picking up the Pace
A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine looked at the effects of brisk walking, and the results show that picking up the pace had a positive impact on our long term health.
Here are the takeaways from the study:
> 78,000 tested
> Average age of 61
> Monitored with a fitness tracker for between 6-8 years
> 9800 steps per day offered the best protection
> Participants whose average highest pace was a brisk walk (between 80-100 steps per minute) had better health outcomes compared with those who walked a similar amount but at a slower pace
> 35% lower risk of premature death, 25% lower chance of heart disease & cancer, 30% lower risk of dementia
To cut some lengthy research short, for a person who’s daily steps include 2400-3000 that are between 80-100 steps per minute see a sharp reduction in the risk of heart disease, cancer, and dementia.
It doesn’t have to be a consecutive 30-minute session but brief bursts throughout the day. A brisk pace can however be different from one person to the next so it’s the relative effort that matters. So, the walk needs to be manageable but does push the boundaries of a comfortable pace. It’s the stress on the body that produces the fitness gains.

Merino: Why is this fibre so special in socks?
