First Sunday morning Family Class back after the summer break! 👊

This week we were working on our side kicks, using a few different drills to improve balance, control, technique and power.

Great to be back on the mats and getting everyone moving again after the break.

What does confidence look like in a 6 yr old?

03/08/2026

Sunday morning family class 🥋👊

Always great to have this enthusiastic young man in class, especially when he gets to train alongside his dad! He brings loads of energy and is a real pleasure to teach.

Brilliant work from both of you! 👏

“What if my child is too shy to start martial arts?”

This is one of the most common worries parents have.

And honestly, that’s completely normal.

Some children need a bit more time. Some need a little encouragement. Some need to watch first, get used to the room, and ease into the class at their own pace.

That’s okay.

We don’t expect every child to walk in full of confidence on day one.

Confidence is something we help them build — step by step, class by class.

At 3, 4, 5 or 6 years old, children aren’t mini adults.

They get distracted.
They forget instructions.
They wobble.
They get excited.
They sometimes need things explained twice.

That’s completely normal.

Our Tots classes are built around that age group. We use simple martial arts skills, structured games, clear routines and lots of encouragement to help them learn without expecting them to be perfect.

It’s not about turning them into little black belts overnight.

It’s about helping them listen, move, focus, try, and grow in confidence one class at a time.

Why should a seven-year-old do martial arts?

Not because they’re worried about getting beaten up. Not because they need to be tougher. And not because they’re being trained to fight.

At that age, martial arts should be fun. It helps children build confidence, coordination, focus and discipline — all while staying active and enjoying themselves.

That’s the real reason to start.

“What if my child doesn’t listen?”

That’s one of the most common worries parents have before starting a class.

But listening is not something children magically arrive with.

It’s something they practise.

In our Tots classes, we work on simple things: standing still, waiting their turn, looking at the instructor, copying a movement, stopping when asked, and trying again.

Some children pick it up quickly. Some take longer.

That’s okay.

The whole point of the class is to help them build those skills in a fun, structured environment.
