Sailing at Newcastle Yacht Club Formed in 1962, Newcastle Yacht Club is situated beside the harbour at the foot of the Mourne mountains.

The sailing season runs from Easter through the summer to the start of October. Race events are held on Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons. In the summer the club offers a training facility for members and non-members to learn how to sail or improve their techniques. The original boats used by the club were Seaflys as they were thought to be the most suitable for the conditions encountered in

And that's it for the 2026 summer training sessions.
Many thanks to everyone who made it a success; trainees, guardians, instructors, safety boat crews, shore support, hot chocolate makers, and helpers.
We'll be back next summer.

Penultimate Tuesday Night - the Ice Cream Run !
Our intrepid trainees sailed from the harbour across to the main beach in Newcastle, through the now familiar roulette wheel of wind conditions that a mournes westerley can produce,
and made their way to up to Nugelato for a much deserved ice cream. Well sailed all, and many thanks to all the members who helped support the evening.

Week 5! The rain cleared and the wind arrived - in abundance - just in time for launching. Many of the two-hander boats on the water on Tuesday nights are helmed by our 'older' Junior membership who are really impressing us with their growing mentoring and leadership skills. While we really appreciate and thank everyone who supports, our two highly skilled safety boat crews also deserve a special mention this week. We just couldn't have these sailing adventures without them!

Week 4 of our Tuesday evening summer sessions and we are halfway through! More wind 😀, a successful introduction to topper sailing for our new young people, and taster sails for their parents in our mirror dinghies all made for a great night. The atmosphere both on the water and in the Clubhouse was just fantastic! Thanks to all our members who volunteer their time to support ⛵️

With the season fast approaching, our members have begun the spring ritual of convincing themselves their boats will definitely be ready in time.

On further investigation of this recently acquired Laser it was discovered the deck was starting to separate from the hull, additionally there was a crack where the boat rested on it's trailer. Not ideal for a boat, as it turns out.

Only one thing for it... Emergency operation required. The operating theatre consisted of a heated garage, the surgical instruments included a Dremel, multi tool, West System epoxy, a collection of screwdrivers and several clamps… and the procedure was carried out with the kind of calm precision normally associated with YouTube tutorials and blind optimism.

Early signs are promising and we’re hopeful the patient will survive long enough to make it to the water in a couple of weeks.

A reminder that all hands on deck required for the club clean up day on Saturday 28 March, followed by the first race of the season on Sunday 29 March.

If your boat is also planning any dramatic structural failures, now would be a good time to get them out of the way.
