Do you remember this day? 🌊
Every journey starts with a first step... or in our case, a first swim! 🏊
Today we're celebrating the very first member of the public to swim in our pool in July 1968. What began with one swimmer has grown into a vibrant community enjoying lessons, fitness sessions, family swims, and so much more.
Richard James, MBE, told us;
"I queued for a hour with a friend who was also 11 years, from 8 am. I was the first member of the public ever to swim in the pool.
By the time the pool opened at 9 am there was a long queue, but we had already changed into our swimming trunks and literally ran through the changing rooms, discarding shirts as we went.
Happy days"

Meet Zoë – Recreation Assistant, Gosforth Leisure Centre.
"When I joined GLL, I was looking for a workplace where I would feel valued and appreciated. Almost two years later, I can honestly say that's exactly what I found."
Zoë Findlay joined GLL as a Recreation Assistant at Gosforth Leisure Centre and quickly discovered a supportive team environment that encouraged her to learn, develop and build confidence. From day one, she was trusted to take on new responsibilities and challenge herself.
"What I enjoy most is that no two days are ever the same. Whether I'm helping customers, supporting colleagues or ensuring everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience, every day brings something different."
For Zoë, one of the things that made GLL stand out was its commitment to both communities and its employees.
"I was drawn to GLL because it's a charitable social enterprise that genuinely invests in people. After changing direction in my career, I was given the opportunity to grow, gain new qualifications and develop skills that I never thought possible."
Since joining the organisation, Zoë has achieved her swimming teaching qualification and has recently been accepted onto the Trainee Manager Programme, which starts in September, something she credits to the encouragement and support of her managers.
"My managers have always encouraged me to challenge myself and step outside of my comfort zone. Their belief in me gave me the confidence to apply for the Trainee Manager Programme and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity."
The GLL value that resonates most strongly with Zoë is More Than a Job.
"Working at GLL has shown me what 'More Than a Job' really means. I've been able to develop professionally while helping create a welcoming and inclusive environment that puts customers and communities at the heart of everything we do."
One of Zoë's proudest moments came when she was recognised as Gosforth Leisure Centre's Staff Member of the Year.
"Receiving the award meant so much to me. It reflected the hard work, dedication and passion I bring to my role and reinforced that GLL values the contribution of its people."
Looking back on her journey so far, Zoë is excited about what the future holds.
"I would wholeheartedly recommend GLL to anyone looking for a place where they can develop, feel valued and make a real difference. I'm proud of how much I've grown, both personally and professionally, and I'm excited to continue building my career here."

Meet Katherine – Swimming Teacher, Gosforth Leisure Centre
"I've been part of GLL since the organisation took over the running of Gosforth Leisure Centre, and one of the things I value most is the opportunity to keep learning, developing and contributing beyond my day-to-day role."
As a Swimming Teacher, Katherine delivers swim school lessons, Swimbies sessions and school swimming lessons. Throughout her time with GLL, she has been encouraged to develop her skills and share her expertise with others.
"Being invited to join the company-wide Swimbies working group was a real confidence boost. I was nervous at first, but everyone was so supportive and welcoming. It quickly became clear that GLL values the ideas and contributions of colleagues from across the organisation."
Through the working group, Katherine has helped shape and improve the Swimbies programme while building her own knowledge and confidence.
"What I love about GLL is that there are opportunities for everyone to develop. I've completed online CPD training, including a course on teaching children with cerebral palsy, and the learning has had a real impact on my work."
For Katherine, the most rewarding part of her role is seeing children grow in confidence and achieve things they never thought possible.
"Every child is different, and being able to adapt my teaching to meet their individual needs is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that the training and support I've received through GLL has helped me make a positive difference to someone's experience makes me proud to work here."
"GLL is a place where people are encouraged to learn, share ideas and develop their potential. I've always felt supported, valued and able to contribute, and that's what makes it such a great place to work."
