One of the activities at Summer School is the Silent Auction, to raise funds for bursaries. This closes on the last-but-one day, it gets a bit frantic! We also enjoyed a 'Sacred Steps' afternoon session led by Mel Prideaux.

We're hiring!
Promotions and Communications Support Worker Unitarians in the Community role
£15 an hour - Part-time, Fixed term contract
This is an exciting and innovative new initiative to support a new community of Unitarian and like-minded people in the heart of Newcastle. We have recently embarked on a brand new venture, and one that may be replicated across the country. Being able to support, promote and get our information out to a wider audience as possible is our exciting next step, and helping us develop, grow, and learn.
This role will directly support our Project Lead, who is working on the first year of the project where our aspirations are that there will be at least one regular weekly (day / evening – on a Wednesday usually) spiritual gathering drawn from a new community of people. In addition we are exploring a wide range of opportunities and possibilities for outreach into areas of social action / initiatives - so there are now great opportunities to build really effective communications and information-sharing.
This is a new part-time post (6 hours a week) which can be worked flexibly with the requirement to be at our Wednesday evening event – and bring us great communications ideas and practical implementation. As this is a very part-time role, we envisage that the postholder will focus on a small number of high-impact activities each month – but is still encouraged to offer ideas and input into our plans from a communications perspective.

We have a free afternoon on the Tuesday during the Summer School week, and some of us like to go for a swim at nearby Hathersage Outdoor Pool. Louise Reeve led worship at the Great Hucklow Old Chapel later that evening.

Travel: In addition to roadworks in the city centre, the roundabout beneath the Gateshead Flyover is closed until the end of August and it is effectively impossible to travel to Newcastle from Gateshead over the Tyne Bridge at present - use the Redheugh Bridge or Tyne Tunnel. This is causing some delays in travelling around the area and extra demand for public transport, please bear this in mind!

The Nightingale Centre in Great Hucklow used to be a convalescent hospital for returning soldiers, named for Florence Nightingale (her initials appear in stained glass above the front door). It's now a hostel and conference centre, and one of the spiritual homes of UK Unitarianism. We like to take full advantage of the beautiful surroundings to go for an all-ages walk in the afternoon to pick blackberries and watch the gliders taking off!
