The Women’s 1st team match was off today but there are a few more matches to catch up with from the last couple of weeks.

Last Sunday, the 1s travelled to picturesque Rock. We won the toss and elected to bat and it proved to be a good decision. Ciara Boaden (70*) and Rachel Foreman (103*) put on a partnership of 167 in 13 overs, as we made 222-2 from our 20. Foreman’s century is only the second century scored in the Premier Division this season. Rock’s reply got off to a fast start but wickets slowed the scoring rate and they were eventually out for 110. Every Newcastle player contributed with bat, ball or in the field. The fielding was superb with five run outs amongst the 10 wickets! Rock were excellent hosts and treated us to a wonderful tea after the match.

Meanwhile, the 2s have had a couple of midweek games. Last week we witnessed another power hitting masterclass from Rachel Foreman. Chasing just 79 to win (after some excellent, tight bowling had restricted Ashington to under 5 an over), Foreman struck 63 not out from just 24 balls. Amongst her sixes she even dispatched one ball out of the ground, into the cemetery!

This week we hosted Riding Mill and dismissed them for just 68, with six different bowlers amongst the wickets. We chased down our victory target for the loss of just a single wicket. This was the 2s’ last match of a fantastic season, where we smashed all of our objectives and finished a very comfortable mid table in the First Division, in our first season.

Just one junior match to report on this week, with most of our opponents struggling for numbers or ground availability on the bank holiday weekend. Our U11s hosted Backworth at Heaton, after the rain stopped at just the right time. Batting first we got a decent score but lost too many wickets. Our bowling was tight and we got a few run outs but Backworth won by virtue of losing fewer wickets.

Last week, we had a full complement of games. Both U11 teams were victorious. The Bees had a close, hard fought win at Ashington whilst the Wasps were a bit more comfortable at Benwell and Walbottle. The U13s battled hard at Benwell Hill and Cramlington but ultimately lost both games.

Whilst the younger age groups still have one more weekend to look forward to, the U15s’ season ended on Monday. Harry Grimes and Alex MacIver were both in the runs again, scoring their second half centuries of the season. The Blacks came second in a high scoring affair against Rock, at Jesmond, whilst the Yellows quickly chased down their victory target after dismissing Morpeth for 84.

We had two women’s teams in action on Wednesday night, and both games survived the forecast rain unscathed.

At Tynedale, against the league leaders, the 1st XI amassed an excellent 147-6, after being inserted. Ciara Boaden continued her excellent form with 81 from 57 balls and she was ably supported by Iona Lowry and Sarah Wood, with 50+ partnerships for both the first two wickets.

Tynedale have been scoring runs for fun this season so, whilst it was a good first innings total, the result was by no means certain. We knew we would have to bowl and field well. Removing two of the top three batters before the team score had passed 50 made the game more comfortable but Tynedale battled on and kept in touch until the very end, finishing 20 behind on 127-3.

This is an incredibly rewarding victory for Newcastle, showing how far we’ve come and, with so many players unavailable, the wonderful strength in depth we now possess in the squad.

Meanwhile, the softball team headed over to Tynemouth where they had a lot of fun, as usual, despite the very blustery conditions!
