We are excited to announce that we have the amazing joining the highfivefitness team, welcome Katie ❤️

Hi everyone, I’m proud to introduce KCS Physiotherapy & Wellbeing at Highfivefitness. I’m a HCPC-registered Physiotherapist and a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. I began my physiotherapy journey three years ago at the University of Sunderland, where I gained valuable experience across all core areas of physiotherapy, including neurology, cardiorespiratory, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation. I’m passionate about every aspect of physiotherapy and excited to continue developing as a professional through my own private practice.

My passion for physiotherapy stems from my lifelong love of sport. I’ve been playing football since I was eight years old and have spent the last five years playing women’s football for Heddon United. I’ve also been training at Highfivefitness for the past five years, and I love being part of such a supportive community. It’s an exciting opportunity to now be joining Clare and Cal’s team and offering physiotherapy services at the gym.

More recently, I’ve taken up running and am currently training for my second Great North Run. My first experience of the event was inspired by my physio placement with Marie Curie, where I saw first-hand the incredible impact the charity has on patients and their families. It motivated me to take on the challenge while supporting such an important cause.

Alongside my physio training, I’ve worked with Ryton and Crawcrook Albion for the past two years as a Sports Massage Therapist and First Aider. During university, I also completed qualifications in sports massage and sports taping, giving me additional skills to help people recover from injury, manage pain, and optimise performance.

My goal is to support clients rehabilitation journey and to keep people doing what they love. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing a long-term condition, or simply looking to stay active the goal is to provide holistic care and to help you achieve your goals. I’m looking forward to meeting you all and becoming part of your health and wellbeing journey 🖐

Training isn't always about how heavy you can lift, a lot of the time we forget to look at things that make us naturally stronger, such as improving our mobility, our unilateral strength or our power💪

I include a plyometric and mobility session in my weekly training and this is so important for all the runners out there 🏃‍♀️

Why do you need plyo training in your running programme?
Running is basically thousands of single-leg landings per mile. Plyometrics trains your body to absorb that force and explode back in a more efficient way helping you to become a stronger, faster and more reactive runner 🙌

Why do we need mobility in our running programme?
Running generally uses the same forward movement pattern and works the same joints for mile after mile. Mobility work allows you to use your hips, ankles and spine in the range of movements that running misses keeping you much more agile and flexible which helps in better stride length and protects the muscles and joints from tightening as a result of the repetitive movements in running 🧘‍♀️

Including this training will help keep you fit, agile, running and injury free...so don't forget your strength and conditioning...it will build your running in such a positive way!💪

Keep going team 🖐

If you are a runner it is so important to do strength specific training to complement your running or any of your chosen sports 🙌

I talk in book The Runner's Guide to Menopause about the importance of strength training for runner's and how to build a programme to help your running and overall performance 💪

Running is effectively a single leg activity and we rely on single leg strength so it is vital to include unilateral training in our workout. 🏃‍♀️

A strong core is also essential as it supports our running efficency which in turn improves our endurance. Training our balance and coordination is also essential and if we include all these elements in our workouts it sets us up for a healthy and strong running future 🙏

Here's a snippet into my workout today which covered all the elements to help support my running strength. Enjoy team 🖐
