Nelson Cricket Club, established in 1861, are one of the founding members of the Lancashire League and are the current record holders for winning more league titles than any other Lancashire League club. Nelson 1st XI secured a convincing 79-run victory over local rivals Colne on Sunday to complete the league double and keep their promotion hopes firmly alive. With a huge clash against league leaders Accrington coming up this weekend, the 1st XI remain firmly in the promotion race.
After Colne won the toss and elected to field, Nelson recovered from 11-3 to post 208-9. Tom Bradshaw produced a superb career-best 69 from 88 balls, including nine fours and a six, sharing a crucial 67-run partnership with professional Tyler McGladdery, who added 51. Neil Thompson also contributed 37.
Bradshaw, who captained Colne last season, recorded his highest-ever score in Lancashire League cricket and his highest score for Nelson’s 1st XI this season.
Nelson’s bowlers then produced an excellent performance to bowl Colne out for 129 in 38.4 overs. Sam Kelly led the way with 3-17, whilst Kuz Nazir and McGladdery claimed two wickets each. Sam Tillotson top-scored for Colne with 36.
The victory earned Nelson 12 valuable points and keeps them third in Division Two. Attention now turns to a huge trip to league leaders Accrington this weekend as Nelson look to make another big step in the promotion race.
