🏉 TONNA RFC U15s | FESTIVAL DAY 🏉

What a day!

We started this morning with exactly the weather nobody ordered. Wet, miserable and absolutely chucking it down. But fair play to everyone, we all turned up, the waterproofs came out, the gazebo went up, and there was some fantastic support from parents and families helping get everything sorted.

It was great to see the boys getting themselves ready, fired up and prepared for the day. Also good to see some of the boys putting in the effort to look the part in their nice new kit. It’s amazing what a smart kit can do for the confidence!

Unfortunately, the day didn’t quite go to plan on the pitch.

We were hoping to pick up at least a couple of wins, but it proved to be a tough tournament. We were first up against Morriston and, in true Tonna fashion, we got the first try of the whole tournament. Unfortunately, Morriston came back strongly and we eventually lost 4-1.

The second game didn’t go our way either, before we finally got the result we were looking for in the third game with a win.

Overall, we only managed one win from six games, which obviously isn’t the result we wanted. But rather than looking at today simply as a day where we didn’t win enough games, we’re going to treat it as a training day, an exposure day and a reality check.

Boys, this is what’s coming.

This is the level of rugby you’re going to be playing. This is the intensity, physicality and game speed that you’re going to have to get used to. There were plenty of lessons today, plenty of things to work on and hopefully plenty of moments that have made the boys realise what they need to improve.

After a long summer of holidays, lie-ins and not much competitive game time, today was exactly the sort of wake-up call we needed.

There were positives. The boys behaved well, worked hard and showed some good rugby at times. But there is plenty of room for improvement, and that’s what we’ll be working on.

We also picked up a few injuries throughout the day. To those boys, take your time, rest up and recover properly. There is absolutely no rush to get back. We would much rather see you fully fit and ready to go than trying to force your way back before you’re ready.

So, although we didn’t bring home the wins or trophies we wanted, we hopefully brought home something just as useful: experience, knowledge and a much clearer idea of what is expected.

Next week, the season starts properly.

Fresh heads.
Fresh legs.
Fresh bodies.
And hopefully a few lessons from today tucked away in the memory bank.

Thanks again to all the parents and supporters who turned up, helped out and backed the boys throughout the day. The support was brilliant, especially considering the weather.

Now we dust ourselves off, recover, learn from today and get ready for next week.

Tonna RFC U15s. Onwards. 🏉

Mud, obstacles, soaked kits, aching legs… and somehow still smiling at the end of it all. Today the boys took on the Race for Life muddy run and absolutely smashed it. 💪

They battled through every obstacle thrown at them, got covered head to toe in mud, and raised money not only for Cancer Research but also for the team. Brilliant effort from every single one of them. It was one of those days where Rugby took a back seat and character, teamwork and heart took over.

A massive thank you has to go to Tania for organising the whole event. These things look easy from the outside, but there’s a lot of work behind the scenes, and today ran brilliantly. So hats off to her for putting together such a great day for the boys and families.

There were plenty of laughs along the way too… some elegant obstacle techniques, some less elegant face-first mud dives, and a few lads who looked like they’d been excavated rather than coached by the end of it. Safe to say the washing machines across Tonna/Britton Ferry/Cimla are about to be working overtime tonight.

On a more personal note, today also carried a lot of meaning for us as a team. One of our coaches, Dai, sadly lost his mum to cancer several weeks ago. So today’s run is dedicated to her memory, with love and respect from all of us at Tonna.

Dai, we’re all thinking of you mate, and we look forward to having you back with the coaching team when the time is right. ❤️

Proud of every single boy today. Mud washes off. Effort, heart and memories don’t.

Last training session of the season completed last night for the Tonna U14s 💪🏉

A bit of rugby…
A bit of chaos…
A bit of “let the boys burn the last bit of energy off before summer”…

Session was run by myself, along with Nath, and to be fair the lads probably thought they were getting an easy finish to the season… until Nath arrived 😅

As you’ll see from the video, the boys got a little sneak preview into next season’s training regime… which apparently involves being sent down a bank, back up a bank, over another bank, into another field and then somehow still being expected to breathe afterwards.

Safe to say there were a few complaints halfway through and a few lads questioning their life choices at the top of the hill 😂

But honestly, brilliant effort from all the boys and a cracking way to finish the season. Great group of lads, loads of laughs, and plenty to look forward to next year.

If your son is going into Year 10 and fancies giving rugby a go, come and join us. No experience needed, just effort, good attitude, and the ability to survive Nath’s “fun” fitness sessions 👀🏃‍♂️💨

New players always welcome.
