Something quite special about b/w photos

No ai needed, no skinny jab. Counting calories and relentless hard work day in day out for years. Sometimes this level of dedication for something isn’t visible but knowing this is part of me when I need it helps motivate me when it’s needed.

I’m signing up for another competition but this is Olympic weightlifting, I want more experience on the platform and eager to show what dedication has done in my training. 😅 this sport is certainly one of the hardest I’ve ever trained! Bodybuilding was tough, I mean to be on top is a whole different level that most don’t see or feel, but Olympic weightlifting bring new demand and she is a bitch!

Another throwback! 💪

This one was a proper shoulder burner! 🔥

The challenge was to hold a weighted sledgehammer straight out in front for as long as possible. The hammer had 8.75 kg of additional weight on it (15kg total), and if your arms dropped below shoulder height or you leaned back far enough for your shoulders to pass your hips, the timer stopped.

Simple event... absolutely horrible to hold! 😂

Looking back at these old strongman events, it’s crazy how many different ways there were to test strength and endurance. 💪 I completely forgot about this one!

Throwback to 5th place British finals IFBA UK 😁 2019

Myself and others believed I was a very close 4th but it was a very tough crowd, I’m still surprised it was 5th and not 4th looking at the others but I was no match for the top 3. The guy who won was like a mini Arnold! Incredible talent and I was incredibly proud I was able to battle out amongst some very conditioned guys. If I ever do one again I’ll be sure to ask the judges for feedback, I’d have loved to have known what didn’t get me 4th place. The tan wasn’t very good on my back and I know you get points for tan 🤷‍♂️ maybe that was the deciding factor.

Doubtful I’ll put this much mass back on for another show but I’d like to think I can improve on the condition 💪.

Another throwback... 8 years ago. 💪

220 kg rack pulls for 4 reps. At the time this was a PB, and I never actually tried going any heavier.

Looking back, I’m not sure how close I’d be to this now. It’s been years since I’ve done rack pulls, but they’ll be making a return to my training after my next deload week.

Right now, my focus is building a solid foundation again. I’m deadlifting 150 kg for 5×5, adding a little each week and letting strength come naturally.

It will take time before I’m safely pulling the numbers I used to, and that’s completely fine. These days I’m not chasing new numbers, I’m chasing longevity and seeing how close I can get to some old numbers.

Slow and steady. Train smart. Stay healthy. 💪

Another throwback – 240kg Yoke Carry. 💪

This was one of the toughest yoke carries I’ve ever done... not because of the weight, but because the organisers didn’t have enough plates to balance each side equally.

I was told, “You’ll be fine, you won’t notice the difference.” 😂…I definitely noticed! Everyone did.

Charging off at full speed turned out to be the worst to do. The uneven load had the yoke pulling me all over the place.

Another reminder that strength alone isn’t enough. Sometimes it’s about adapting to what’s in front of you and making the best of the situation.

70kg Log press throwback

I think I managed 7 reps before the timer gave out at 1 minute for this event, not sure as the video cuts short before the minute and it was many years ago. I do remember it was a different kind of experience in the pouring rain! ☔️ thinking I hope we don’t get lightening 🫣 what a way to go ⚡️ definitely a first for a headstone, “struck down by lightning whilst performing a log press”.

Another throwback! 💪

400kg (2014)... then 500kg (2018) on the leg press over the years.

Sadly, I can’t find the videos of when we added chains and a to sit on top, apparently a fully loaded leg press still wasn’t enough... 😂

Those happened on more than one occasion too! Good times Gary!
