A faster 400m does not always mean your CSS will change.
CSS looks at the relationship between your 400m and 200m times. It is trying to estimate the pace you can hold, not simply reward your fastest swim.
So, if your 400m improves but your 200m also gets quicker, the gap between the two efforts may stay similar. When that happens, your CSS may only move slightly or not at all.
That does not mean you have made no progress.
You may have improved your speed, pacing, confidence or overall fitness. It may simply mean your sustainable pace has not shifted by the same amount yet.
For us as coaches, that is still useful information. It helps us decide whether the next block should focus more on aerobic endurance, pacing control, holding technique under fatigue or developing speed.
The number matters, but the story behind it matters more.

Congratulations .jones1970 on age group win at UKtri this weekend. Also went on to help out at the finish cheering other in and handing out medals. Flying solo for the first time whilst her partner .nunn.92 was in Sweden taking part in Vatternrundan 315 sportive. 💪🏼😎
