Roberttown Community Cycling Club Welcome to Roberttown Community Cycling Club. We are a non-competitive village cycling club. We believe in cycling for all irrespective of ability.

Our aim is to provide a fun environment for the people of Roberttown and surrounding villages. We are a family orientated group catering for all levels of ability. We hope all the community will join us in promoting the health and social benefits of cycling. We aim to reflect the multi cultural area in which we live, and welcome everyone to join us.

Trail Thursday Evening Ride 17th September.
Meet at Roberttown Community Centre for a 6:30pm departure. Please do not park in the Community Centre car park. The route will be decided on the night but will be suitable for gravel bikes as well as mountain bikes. Lights will be necessary for the ride. Please put a comment if you intend to ride so you can be contacted should the ride be cancelled.

Tuesday Evening Ride Report 15th September
Five cyclists at Roberttown Community Centre this evening, Pratima, Angela, David H, Steve and myself (Ken). Quite a breezy evening but no rain in the forecast. We left in sunshine and met Chris R at Ha’Penny Bridge. I don’t know if Chris had a special tea but he shot up Wood Lane like a rocket. The rest of us were a little more sedate though still rode up the lane at a good pace. At the top I checked Chris’ bike to see if it was an E-Bike but no it was genuine power from Chris. Whatever he had before the ride I want some too.

A meander into Upper Hopton and then up to Liley Lane. A short stretch on that busy road and then it was downhill via Healey Green Lane. What goes down must go up again and indeed it did by way of Lucy Lane. A meander along Highfield Lane, Lascelles Hall Road and Fenay Lane took us up to the top of Almondbury.

We resisted a left turn towards Castle Hill but continued down Somerset Road to Wakefield Road. We made our way through Moldgreen and onto Bradley Mill Road. We returned to Roberttown along Leeds Road and our usual way through Battyeford and Old Bank.

A thoroughly good evening for cycling, about 17miles and from Roberttown and probably 21 miles from home. About 2000 feet of some serious climbing. Apart from Rocket Chris Angela showed how much she has improved in such a short time since she joined the club. Angela was particularly pleased that Pratima arrived at the Community Centre so that she wasn’t the only lady in the group. Pratima had been lured this evening by the tempting climb up Wood Lane which she achieved with ease. I didn’t know she liked the hills so much. Thank you all for cycling this evening.

Ride Report: Saturday 12th September – The Langsett Loop
A compact but determined peloton of just two riders turned out for today’s trek from Roberttown to Langsett.
The rain started exactly as we rolled out, but thankfully it didn’t last long. Our route took us up through the Holme Valley before we tackled the Flouch climb followed by the back roads past the windmills towards Millhouse Green. A slight navigational blip meant we treated ourselves to an extra loop of some local lanes 🙈, but we quickly got back on track. We descended the steep incline down to the famous "spotty café" (Bank View Cafe) just as it started to rain again.
Sheltering inside, we enjoyed their usual good food and service while hoping the weather would clear for the return leg. Unfortunately it was still raining and combined with me feeling a bit under the weather, I made the executive decision to take the direct route back via Huddersfield.
Having battled a headwind for most of the way out, we had high hopes of being blown all the way home. While that tailwind didn’t entirely materialise, the return leg was definitely easier going. To top it off, we were treated to an amazing rainbow just as we started the descent into New Mill. Sadly, it had vanished by the time I managed to stop and retrieve my phone (where’s Steve when you need him?! 😂). By the time we hit New Mill, the rain had completely stopped, making for a pleasant final stretch back home.

Saturday Ride 12th September.
Meet at Roberttown Community Centre for an 8:30am departure to Langsett. The proposed route is about 45 miles with a few hills, but nothing too bad.

Ride report 10th September.
After two weeks with no Thursday rides due to a lack of participants, admittedly with not great weather, great to get out on a club ride again. 3 of us at the Roberttown Community Centre being Karen, Dave L and me, Dave H. After a brief discussion I was allowed to lead a ride into Huddersfield and back via Kilner Bank. We set off to Taylor Hall Lane and a brief meander through the fields opposite. Down The Clough and over Halfpenny Bridge. Up to the viaduct and then down to the canal. Along the canal to Aspley and then a few turns around the streets of Huddersfield before back on to the Wakefield Road before turning towards Kilner Bank. Then right up the hill to The Dalton, through the park and then back along Dalton Bank Road before back on to the Calder Valley Greenway to Mirfield. Karen left us at Mirfield and the Daves carried on back to Leeds Road. Dave L split off at Leeds Road and I carried on back to Roberttown and Hartshead. 17 miles in all and back by 8.15pm. Thanks to Karen and Dave L for ensuring the ride went ahead. Rain held off until we got back to Mirfield and stayed light.

✨🚴‍♂️ Tuesday 8th September Evening Ride Report

🌦️💨The rain held off 🌧️❌ and four riders met up at the Community Centre. 👥🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️🗺️ The Route we chose formed a figure-of-eight ♾️, combining steady climbs, fast descents, and traffic-free greenways.
We set off down Roberttown Lane 🛣️, joining the Spen Valley Greenway heading towards Cleckheaton 🌳. We then turned off onto Cliff Lane to climb up into Gomersal 🧗‍♂️. From Gomersal, we climbed up to Birkenshaw roundabout 🔄, dropped down the A58 📉, and took a sharp left onto Latham Lane to head back into Gomersal again 🔁.Taking Upper Lane 🚴‍♂️💨 and the descent of Listing Lane, then the Spen Ringway to rejoin the Spen Valley Greenway to reach Ravensthorpe . We then rode into Mirfield, dropped onto Steanard Lane 🌊, and looped around to Lower Hopton. From Newgate 📈, we went straight over the traffic lights 🚦 back into Mirfield, and then we made our way home 🏡.
📊 We rode: ~18 miles, 📏Weather: Overcast but dry ☁️👌

Ride Report Saturday 5th September
The Windmills
A rather breezy morning, however it was lovely to have 6 fellow riders assembled at the community centre ready for the challenging route to The Windmills Café. Today’s riders included our new member Angela, the return of Dave H, Caroline, Neil, Karen, June and me Virginia. First climb of the day Wood Lane, lovely surface with little traffic to hinder the group. A steady climb up to Grange Moor and onwards to Emely. The iconic windmills could be seen in the distance, not to be fooled we still had a couple of hundred metres of climbing ahead. Past the 3 Acres and Shelley for the next climb through Lower and Upper Cumberworth. This was now the highest point of the route and the views of almost 360 degrees were amazing. Such a joy and despite the constant head or crosswind the group maintained a good pace. We arrived at the café and managed to find a couple of tables to eat and socialise together. Food was ordered, Neil enjoyed a full breakfast which looked huge. A natter with the Ravensthorpe gang who arrived after us and left before us, we were still enjoying a chat and catching up with each other. The return journey via Whitley Road to Victoria was challenging, a very strong headwind until reaching Sheffield Road. A quick chat and off down the hill, through Jackson Bridge and into New Mill, onwards to Honley, and the usual route through Huddersfield. On to the canal via Ashgrove Road and back on the greenway to Mirfield and Roberttown. A distance of approximately 45 miles and just under 3000’ of climbing made for an excellent day out on our bikes. Well done to Angela and welcome back Dave H.
