A fantastic lesson this evening, full of hard work & progress from everyone! 👏
Congratulations to all of our students who graded and took that next step in their journey — you should be proud of what you achieved!
And a big shout-out to everyone who didn’t grade this time. Every class you attend, every technique you improve and every challenge you work through is progress. Grading is just one milestone: the training you put in week after week is what really counts.
Keep training, keep improving, and keep moving forward. 👊💥

Sticking, or “Chi Sau”, is a core concept of Wing Chun ✋🤚
Once contact is made, the Wing Chun practitioner learns to maintain that connection, using touch to feel changes in pressure and movement. This allows them to control balance, redirect attacks and create opportunities to gain the advantage.
Partner drills such as Dan Chi Sau and P**n Sau gradually refine this skill, developing sensitivity, timing and fast reactions. 👊💥
Rather than relying solely on the eyes to recognise an incoming attack, the practitioner learns to feel the movement and respond naturally through contact.
This ability to “listen” through touch is at the heart of Wing Chun’s sticking hands practice.

Bridge the gap 🌉
One of the core concepts within Wing Chun is to "seek a bridge" with the opponent. This is the physical connection to an arm, leg, or weapon.
Remember: the bridge is a means to reach the opponent, not used to chase their hands or fight their arms.
Used effectively, it provides a pathway to disrupt their structure and balance while creating the opportunity to counterattack.👊💥

When the way is clear… Go forward! 🤜
Wing Chun has a core concept of “forward intent”, but this does not mean pushing your opponent around or overpowering them with brute force. It is an acquired skill that comes with training & practice.
The idea is not to brawl & throw many wild or heavy punches in the hope that one may land, while opening yourself up for a counterattack in the process!
Using a variety of drills, students learn to react and strike quickly and effectively while controlling the centerline, and pressuring the opponent 👊💥

“Don’t think – FEEL”
The famous line by Bruce Lee - who was a student of Grandmaster Ip Man - is true of Wing Chun and it’s techniques!
In scenarios where you will need to defend yourself the situation may be unpredictable, there is no safety net, and often no second chances.
At Wing Chun Alliance Milton Keynes, we train our muscle memory and pressure sensitivity through a variety of methods, so the practitioner does not need to guess what the attacker will do, and then recall a complex sequence of movements.
The aim is to end the fight as quickly as possible, and not to go toe-to-toe for points.
Thinking is slow.
Feeling is fast.

THE SHADOW SIDE: everything in balance ☯
In Wing Chun, both sides of the body are trained equally.
Should the dominant side not be in a position to strike, become trapped or injured, you can still adapt and react without hesitation. Regularly training techniques with your non-dominant, or "shadow," side develops that adaptability.
It teaches both sides of the body to communicate and work together, rather than relying on one side to do all the work.
A martial artist who can only move effectively on one side has already lost part of their ability.
Train your shadow side—not because you expect to lose your dominant side, but because true skill means never depending on it alone. 👊💥

Hands for Hands, Feet for Feet!
This evening's class explored the footwork side of Wing Chun, from effective kicking techniques to practical defences against incoming attacks. 👟💥
We looked at how kicks can be used to control distance, break an opponent's structure, and create opportunities for follow-up techniques. While Wing Chun includes kicks to various levels, many of its most effective applications focus on the thigh, knee, shin, and ankle to completely destroy the opponent's foundations and structure.
The goal isn't to rely on hands or feet alone—it's learning how they work together as one complete system. 👊💥👟💥

Nuk Sau
This three-movement drill develops one of Wing Chun's fundamental principles: simultaneous attack and defence
👊Tan & Punch
👊Gaan & Punch
👊Pak & Low Palm Strike
Perfect for refining timing and body structure.
This drill is easy to learn, but has many layers - Keep the focus! 🙏

Reaction Drills 🫣
Starting a reaction drill with your eyes closed is great practice as it removes anticipation and forces you to rely on your senses, awareness, and trained responses.
Open your eyes... Assess... Decide. React.
Every movement becomes deliberate, every response controlled. 👊💥
This is one of the key skills we worked on during tonight's training as well as real-world self-defence scenarios.
