Fantastic 25km devils pulpit loop with Paul Jenkins . We had 4 seasons in one day with wind, rain, sleet and sun. Jacket on/off/on/off. Lovely and quiet at the pulpit, lots of sheep to talk to in the field, plenty of muddy puddles that would have kept Peppa happy. Impromptu stop at Turnip The Beet then back to Speciality Coffee Shop Carbeth to finish. Cobwebs definitely blown away.

If you go down to the woods tonight you’ll have probably found a group of intrepid trail runners trying to dodge the mud (no chance), hurdle walls (climb over), get the headtorches on and get completely lost (I knew exactly where we were but they didn’t 😂). 10km done and now time to wash the trainers. Impromptu Merrick hill race today. I was heading back home to sunny Ayrshire and realised the race was on. So slight detour down to Glentrool for a 12 noon start. The sun was splitting the sky and the water in Loch Trool was so reflective.

The race is 8 miles / 14km with 900m elevation. It starts at Bruce’s Stone and run by Girvan Harriers.

Looking at the map I could see it was a steep up but the climb to the Fell of Eschoncan was gruesome, steep tussocks and mud. Over a big stile with the biggest steps and then on to the Bennan Hill. Another stile and up to Benyellary and then round the Neive of the Spit ridge and finally to the Merrick summit. With 700 +m ticked off most of the hard work had been done (along with much swearing). Now about turn and the down hill back to the start. It was great until the last few km when the mud, tussocks and steepness was really technical. The amount of times I slid and then sat on the hill. Eventually crossed the finish is 2hrs 11min and 2nd female. Wasn’t allowed in the house until I was hosed down! Westerlands Cross Country Club Scottish Hill Runners Girvan Harriers

Supposed to be in Torridon this weekend but with the weather being iffy I decided to stay local. Morag and I braved the morning rain to head up the Whangie, Burncrooks and Kilmannan for 15km (that’s what I told Morag it was going to be but it was really 17.5km oops 😬). It’s now back to wet feet, mud and squelch. Ah well, it was nice having dry feet for a few months. Back to trainer rotation.

Ding Ding Highland Fling Race ! Today I was back to sweeping duty with Theo Jaeger MV for the Highland Fling race. We were covering from the start at Milngavie up to Rowardennan along the West Highland Way Official approx 44km. Our role was to take down signs, pick up rubbish and most importantly check on the runners and provide motivation, support and (hopefully not required) first aid. The weather was cracking, possibly a bit too hot and the midges were on form over Conic. The atmosphere was electric with all volunteers on form. There was lots of eating done by me along the way as I found every bramble bush there was. Theo instead bought a Calipo. We finished with a wee dip in Loch Lomond then up to the finish to cheer everyone on and catch up with many running friends. The trail running community is the best ❤️! End of the month Epic Crew on tour. This time it was meeting at Overtoun house for a loop of Lang Craigs and Doughnot hill. The run consisted of me doing sprints to catch the group each time I stopped to pick brambles, trying to workout why there was an emu in a field full of sheep (answers on a postcard please, trying to get a sheep into a field rather than it continually headbutt the fence, running through the purple heather, tick checking and removing, smiles at the trig then the fun downhill. Not to mention the chat and finally well earned homemade biscuits thanks to Paul Jenkins . Great 11km done.
