Before You Apply for a Scholarship, Check These Three Things

First, eligibility. Do you actually meet the requirements?

Second, fit. Is the scholarship connected to your course, experience, background or future plans?

Third, evidence. Can you show why you are a strong candidate through your achievements, experience and impact?

Do not apply just because it is a scholarship.

A good scholarship application starts with choosing the right opportunity, not applying for every opportunity you see.

Small Businesses Are Missing These Funding Opportunities

Most small businesses need money to grow, but many business owners are sitting on a goldmine of funding opportunities they have never explored.

Funding can come in different forms: grants, loans, competitions, accelerator programmes, innovation funding and government support.

If you are in Nigeria, explore opportunities from organisations such as SMEDAN, Bank of Industry and the Tony Elumelu Foundation.

If you are in the UK, look at Innovate UK, the UK Government Find a Grant portal and British Business Bank-backed funding.

The important thing is this, don’t wait until your business is desperate for money before you start looking at those opportunities.

Start early. Know what is available. Check what you qualify for.

Your next level of growth is sitting on a funding opportunity you have not yet discovered or explored.

What Would Someone Find If They Googled You Today?

Have you ever Googled your own name or business?

If a recruiter, potential client, collaborator or conference organiser searched for you today, what would they find?

Would they see your expertise, achievements and the work you have done or very little that represents who you are professionally?

Your online presence is now part of your reputation as a professional or small business.

You do not need to be famous.

But you should make it easy for the right people to understand what you do and the value you bring.

This is my assignment for you today below;

Google your name and see what your digital footprint is saying about you.

It took me about 4 hours to review just one chapter of my DBA student’s literature review.

Academia is not for the faint-hearted. 😅

Postgraduate students, please extend some grace to your supervisors. You are not the only student they are supporting, and good supervision takes time.

In most cases, a delayed response is not neglect. Your supervisor is still reading your work carefully, checking your arguments, questioning your sources, and making sure the feedback they give you will actually improve your work.

Give them a little time to do a thorough and robost job.

Behind those comments and corrections are hours of reading, thinking and reviewing.
