Sauna and cold water immersion

For many open water swimmers, a sauna is far more than a luxury—it has become part of the overall experience.
Current research suggests that regular sauna use can support cardiovascular health, promote relaxation and improve overall wellbeing. Combined with open water swimming, it creates a powerful contrast that many people find physically refreshing and mentally restorative.
While scientists continue to study the long-term effects of contrast therapy, one thing is clear: when practised safely, the combination of cold water and heat can be an enjoyable way to recover, relax and spend time with a community of like-minded swimmers.
Whether you're chasing performance gains or simply enjoying a post-swim chat with friends, the journey from the cool water to the warmth of the sauna is one that many swimmers look forward to every time they visit the lake.

October 2026 Swim Times at Six Hills
The winter timetable starts to run this month and the 550m course will be closed when the water temperature is below 16 degrees (get those fingers crossed for a later summer / early autumn heatwave).

When booking take the time to make sure that you have the correct kit to deal with colder water and colder air when you get out.

Evening swims will start to need headtorches / lights on hats, and a light on your tow float. Worth getting those out of the drawer and charging them up now or replacing the batteries.

Please bear in mind we only hold a limited number of tow floats to borrow and these are given first of all to any guest swimmers who may not have had the opportunity to purchase one, or who may decide not to carry on after a first try. We may have to keep you waiting if you forget yours and ours are all being used.

We are very much looking forward to seeing you all whether it is during the day or in the evening.

Did you know that geese take it in turns so that others can have a rest?
And it is thought that swimming in a line is like a Peleton with those behind benefitting from less drag

Ever wondered why some people *really* dislike the feeling of stones, mud or slimy lake bottoms under their feet? 🌿🦶🌊

Our feet are packed with sensory receptors that constantly send information to the nervous system about pressure, texture, temperature and movement. Because the feet are our main point of contact with the ground, the brain pays close attention to what they’re experiencing.

For some people, unexpected textures like sharp stones, squishy mud or slippery plants can feel intensely uncomfortable. Their nervous system may interpret that unfamiliar sensory input as something to be cautious about, triggering a stronger “get me out of here!” response.

It’s not necessarily being fussy or overly sensitive. It can simply be the way their brain processes sensory information.

So next time someone hesitates before stepping into a lake, remember: their feet might be having a much bigger conversation with their nervous system than you realise. 💚
