Saturday 11 April 2026 saw a New Sport Launched at Drayton Community Sports Club

Drayton Community Sports Club has successfully hosted a Pétanque Open Day, introducing the popular French game—often known as boules—to the local community.

The event followed an approach from the University of the Third Age (U3A), who were keen to see Pétanque established in Market Drayton. In response, the club has invested in a purpose-built playing area, large enough to accommodate three competition pistes or four club pistes.

The Open Day welcomed players of all ages and abilities, many trying the sport for the first time in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Expert coaching was provided by national Pétanque coach Clive Noke, who is pictured delivering guidance during the session.

Also present at the event were local councillors Tom Dainty, David Minnery and Jeremy Blandford, demonstrating strong local support for the initiative.

Membership of the new Pétanque section will be just £4 per year, reinforcing the club’s commitment to accessible, low-cost sport for the whole community.

Paul Virgo, Chairman, said:
“Our mission is simple — more people active, more often.
Pétanque is a perfect example of that: it’s inclusive, social, and something people can pick up very quickly. We’re delighted to bring it to Market Drayton and to see such a strong turnout for the first session.”

The introduction of Pétanque adds to the growing range of sports available at the club, further strengthening its role as a hub for community activity and wellbeing.
