What is Yin Yang Yoga? ☯️

Yin-Yang Yoga, is a unique and harmonious blend of two distinct yoga styles, sometimes taught separately and sometimes together.

Inspired by the five element theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the meridian system, nature and the changing seasons. We utilize the ancient symbol of Yin and Yang to navigate the dualities of our world, connecting us back to our centre, the rhythms and cycles of nature.

In Taoist philosophy, Yin and Yang represent complementary forces that are interconnected, interdependent, and constantly in dynamic balance, symbolizing the harmony of opposites in the natural world. In yoga, we use this idea to mix the active and passive styles to find a balance of opposites.

This practice is more than just movement or exercise it’s a journey towards equanimity. With its passive, cooling nature, Yin Yoga invites stillness, surrender, and quiet reflection. In contrast, energising Yang styles like Hatha and Vinyasa, bring warmth, movement, focus, and determination. Together, Yin and Yang practices create a balanced approach to yoga, supporting physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

All of my classes are taught with a functional approach, offering variations for different types of bodies, making it very accessible.

🌍 The Earth Element in TCM

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Earth element represents nourishment, grounding, stability and feeling supported. It is the energy that helps us feel safe, cared for and connected — not only to the world around us, but also to ourselves.

Earth is connected with the Spleen and Stomach organs and meridians, which are important for digestion and transforming the food we eat into energy and nourishment. Earth is associated with late summer, as well as the final two weeks of each season — those natural times of transition when we are encouraged to pause, digest and rebalance.

When our Earth element feels in balance, we may feel more grounded and centred, nourished and supported. There can be a sense of stability, belonging and feeling at home within ourselves. 🌾

When our Earth element feels depleted or out of balance, we may notice more worry or overthinking, digestive discomfort, tiredness or simply a feeling of being a little unsteady or disconnected.

Join me on the mat for Earth element inspired practices over the next coming weeks. 🌾
