Over summer, club member Rob Gollings brought out his privately-owned Schempp-Hirth Discus CS [G-CKAP] for some fantastic soaring high above the Lincolnshire countryside!

Today, we’re highlighting one of the most distinguished aircraft in our fleet: the Grob G103 Twin II Acro [G-DEXA].

Built in 1984, G-DEXA began her career as a Viking TX.1 glider [ZE534], serving for over two decades across the UK with the RAF Air Cadets and the Central Gliding School to train generations of young aviators. In 2008, she transitioned to civilian life on the British register and spent many years forming the backbone of training at the Trent Valley Gliding Club.

Following the unfortunate closure of Trent Valley earlier this year, we were honored to acquire G-DEXA and bring her home to Strubby South Airfield. Today, she continues her long-standing legacy of flight instruction right here with the Lincolnshire Gliding Club, helping our student pilots master winch launches and progress toward their solo wings.

On Sunday, student pilot Jack "Sandman" Warsop-Hook achieved another key training milestone at Strubby South Airfield, completing a dedicated training session in the Alexander Schleicher ASK 13 [G-CKJL] alongside Chief Flying Instructor Richard "Dick" Skerry.

The session focused on the precision and control required for mastering winch launches and takeoffs. Refining techniques during the initial launch phase is a vital part of our syllabus, ensuring our students build the confidence, spatial awareness, and flight safety skills needed as they progress toward solo flight.

Over summer, our airfield was buzzing with activity as licensed and student pilots alike took to the skies above the Lincolnshire countryside! With the summer season now behind us, we’re looking back on an incredible few months of non-stop flying, milestone achievements, and fantastic soaring conditions at Strubby South Airfield.

Our fleet and dedicated team kept the winch busy all season long. Here’s how the numbers stacked up:

Alexander Schleicher ASK 13 [G-CKJL]: 201 launches | 31h 41min

Grob G103 Twin II Acro [G-DEXA]: 111 launches | 27h 21min

Alexander Schleicher Ka 6 CR [G-DFKX]: 14 launches | 6h 47min

Private Fleet: 47 launches | 23h 01min

Together, that brings our summer total to 373 launches and over 88 hours of flight time! From fundamental student training and airframe conversions to private owners chasing thermal lift, it’s been a season defined by steady progress, excellent airmanship, and a shared passion for soaring.

On Friday, student pilot Jack "Sandman" Warsop-Hook achieved a key training milestone at Strubby South Airfield, flying the Alexander Schleicher ASK 13 [G-CKJL] alongside Chief Flying Instructor Richard "Dick" Skerry.

The session focused on introducing fundamental stall training. Jack worked on recognising the early symptoms of an impending stall and practiced handling various stall scenarios, including stall entries with one wing down. Developing airmanship around stall identification and recovery is an essential element of our syllabus, building the confidence and critical flight safety skills required as our students progress toward solo flight.

On Friday, student pilot Niall Brady reached an exciting training milestone at Strubby South Airfield, completing his first full flights in the Grob G103 Twin II Acro [G-DEXA].

Flying alongside instructor Richard Walker, Niall managed the entire sortie from takeoff to landing, while also gaining valuable experience utilizing thermal lift. Having primarily trained in our Alexander Schleicher ASK 13 [G-CKJL], transitioning to the advanced capabilities of the Grob G103 allowed Niall to adapt his skills to a different airframe and develop a deeper understanding of varying aircraft handling characteristics.

On Saturday, the Lincolnshire Gliding Club was proud to support a special charity flight at Strubby South Airfield in the Grob G103 Twin II Acro [G-DEXA].

Club chairman Patrick "Pat" Fowler piloted a flight for Diana Wilkinson, a nurse with the Paget’s Association, who successfully raised over £1,000 for the charity. This marks a wonderful milestone for our local operations, as Diana is the first visitor to utilise a glider flight experience at the club to raise funds for a vital health cause.
