Our President Sam McCombes, the Members of the Bowling Club Council and the Membership of Lurgan Bowling Club are saddened to learn of the passing of their oldest and Honorary Member, Leslie Menabney at the age of 94 years.

Leslie Menabney joined the Lurgan Club in 1959 and subsequently was elected to the General Committee on which he served spells as Honorary Secretary from 1965 to 1967 and 1975 to 1976. He was also Honorary Treasurer in 1962, and was honoured by the club when he was made Club President in 2002.

Four years into his membership he was selected to play for the Lurgan Senior team and went on to skip a rink for twenty five years. He was a member of the team that won the NIBA Senior Challenge Cup in 1994 and 1996, and also was in the team that finished runner-up in the IBA Senior Cup in 1981.

In 1968 he partnered the legendary Tom Henry to win the Pairs Title in the Annual Portrush Bowling Tournament.

Leslie’s bowling skills were well recognised at Association level, he having played for its team for an amazing twelve years. He also was an Irish Indoor international having been selected to play six times for his country in the mid-seventies.

He also served bowls well in an administrative role having been on the NIBA General Purposes Committee for eight years.

His extensive knowledge of the game stood him in good stead when he was NIBA Selection Committee Convener for a record twenty-one years.

He was elected an Irish International Selector in 1988 and acted in that capacity until his resignation in 2008.

Leslie’s extensive involvement in bowls at all levels has been justly marked at the Club and Association by him having Honorary Membership being conferred upon him.

In later years when Leslie could no longer make it to the Club he always enjoyed the Officers' Christmas visit and the opportunity to catch up on all that was happening around the Club including the teams' performances.

We extend our sincere condolences to his Wife, Mary and her Family at this time of sad bereavement.
