Master Chan returns from South Korea after Great Britain’s most successful World Poomsae Championships to date 🤩

The team came home with three medals:

🥇 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱 — Master Ali Pourtaheri, Over 65 Individual Male
🥈 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 — Master Simon Negus, Under 60 Individual Male
🥉 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘇𝗲 — Gini Brown, Pina Petrillo & Jenny Furness, Over 60 Female Team

That placed Great Britain 𝟭𝟮𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝟴𝟯 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 on the medal table — a remarkable result at the biggest World Championships ever staged, with more than 1,400 athletes competing from around the world.

The standard was exceptionally high, particularly in the younger categories, where many nations now run full-time training programmes alongside education. Against that, all 33 of our athletes represented Great Britain with pride and delivered some outstanding performances — and with a little more luck on our side, the results could have been even stronger.

Congratulations to the whole Great Britain team. Onwards and upwards as we look ahead to next year’s European Championships and the next World Poomsae Championships in Türkiye in 2028 🇹🇷

With several of our own club members now on the GB talent pathway, we hope these results inspire them to keep working hard — and to hopefully represent their country next time around 🇬🇧

World Champion 🤩

Congratulations to Master Ali Pourtaheri who wins the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships!

Captain of the Great Britain team, Master Ali defeated Portugal, Canada and Spain as well as home favourite Korea before facing off against Denmark. In a tense final and with the pressure on, Master Ali remained composed and delivered an assured performance to take the Gold medal 🥇

Well done to Master Ali and all the athletes from Great Britain so far from all at Loughton Taekwondo. Keep it up, we are routing for you back home! 💪

🇬🇧 KOREA BOUND 🇰🇷

Master Chan flies out this week to the 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships which will take place in Chuncheon, South Korea, 16–20 September, as a Team Coach for the Great Britain National Team.

This one means a little more than most as exactly 20 years ago this week Master Chan travelled to South to undertake his 2nd Dan. At the same time he had the chance to watch the very first World Poomsae Championships 2006 and see GB Poomsae athletes take to the floor for the first time. He had spent years as a sparring competitor, but what he saw on those mats changed the whole direction of his Taekwondo and inspired him to change disciplines in order to go on and represent Great Britain - as an elite athlete at six World Championships over ten years, then as a GB Coach for the last ten years. Chuncheon will be his third World Championships in the corner, after Taipei 2018 and Hong Kong 2024🥋

Good luck Master Chan, and good luck to all 34 athletes representing Great Britain in Korea. The whole Loughton Taekwondo family is behind you 🇬🇧

Note classes will continue to run as normal whilst Master Chan is away with Coach Charlene leading our classes and supported by our team of Black Belts 💪

8 weeks to the British Taekwondo National Championships ~ we can’t wait!

🥋 9th Bluewave Poomsae Championships 🌊

Yesterday, 19 students represented Loughton Taekwondo at the 9th Bluewave Poomsae Championships — and what a day it was!

Our squad was on the floor from the very first performance of the competition at 9:30am right through to the last one of the day, competing across all five courts in individual, pair and team categories.

They came home with 27 medals — 11 Gold 🥇, 4 Silver 🥈 and 12 Bronze 🥉.

But as proud as we are of the results, it’s the other things we’ll remember. Students working hard through the summer showing their best ever results on the mats. Athletes who had a difficult round, dusted themselves down and went again. Students supporting each other between courts, and showing respect to every opponent and every official in the hall.

That is what we mean when we talk about building respect and confidence through Taekwondo. The medals are a bonus. The character is the point.

A huge thank you to our parents and families. The early alarms, the long day in a sports hall, the encouragement from the sidelines — none of this is possible without you, and we don’t take it for granted.

Nationals are 8 weeks away. Back in the dojang this week. 💪
