OUT & ABOUT TOMORROW – HOLME PIERREPONT
Tomorrow evening we’re heading over to Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club to join them for their club session, with two different options available for Waterside members.
You can join our usual planned flatwater session, or, if you fancy something a little different, have a go on the whitewater course.
Boats and kit can be provided for members taking part in either option, so please don’t let not having the right equipment put you off.
FLATWATER SESSION
Our normal Out & About flatwater session will meet from 18:30.
Simply sign up to the session through MyClubhouse as usual and we’ll identify those who are joining the flatwater group.
Sign up here:
https://watersidecc.myclubhouse.co.uk/Events/Calendar/View?id=853
WHITEWATER OPTION
For those who would like to have a go on the whitewater course, we need you to be able to arrive at Holme Pierrepont for 18:00.
This is because we are governed by the whitewater course closing time of 19:30, so we need to make the most of the available session time.
There is an additional £8 supplement for the whitewater option. This is paid through Waterside Canoe Club, and the club will then pay Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club on your behalf.
Whitewater supplement payment:
https://buy.stripe.com/5kQ6oHg4i9ZZaTYaiQcjS2k
You will also need to complete the required consent form before taking part:
Consent form:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScGWd7LSspPLdpAwuckT1UrIVDYdToC7pSwU_DGFolqxbaaFg/viewform
SO, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO THE WHITEWATER SESSION
Please make sure you:
1. Sign up to the Out & About session through MyClubhouse as usual.
2. Are able to arrive at Holme Pierrepont for 18:00.
3. Complete the Google consent form.
4. Pay the £8 whitewater supplement.
5. Message Matt on 07783 603648 to confirm that you have signed up, completed the form and paid.
Matt will then make sure everyone taking part in the whitewater option is kept informed of the arrangements ahead of the session.
NEVER TRIED WHITEWATER BEFORE?
Don’t automatically assume this one isn’t for you.
If you’ve been curious about having a go, this is a great opportunity to try something different while we’re visiting Holme Pierrepont, with club members around you and boats and kit available.
Equally, if whitewater isn’t your thing, that’s absolutely fine. Our normal flatwater session is still going ahead from 18:30, so there really is something for everyone.

The Waterside Canoe Club
https://watersidecc.myclubhouse.co.uk/Events/Calendar Waterside Canoe Club is a small friendly, family orientated club in Leicestershire.
We meet on Thursday evenings at New Parks Leisure Centre swimming pool during the winter (Oct-Mar) with expeditions and weekend paddles thrown in! In the summer, (Apr-Sep) we meet every week on Tuesday & Thursday evenings (mostly on the Soar and Trent) and have camping trips and other weekend events. We also have many social events planned throughout the year. For more information on how to join us, please contact us on 07783603648 or [email protected]
Afternoon All,
Long message alert !
Lots going on this week and into next.
_Before we get into the weeks info though, there is also an important update regarding Andy Oughton’s funeral and plans for the day, on Friday, which we know many members will want to be aware of – So see details below._
*TONIGHT – OUT & ABOUT: WEST BRIDGFORD → HOLME PIERREPONT*
Tonight we’re heading over to Nottingham for a really nice, laid-back downstream paddle on the River Trent, starting from West Bridgford and finishing at Holme Pierrepont.
A great chance to get away from our usual stretch of water, enjoy a relaxed evening paddle and explore somewhere different with the club.

*THURSDAY – OUT & ABOUT AT HOLME PIERREPONT CANOE CLUB*
We’re Out & About again on Thursday — this time joining our friends at Holme Pierrepont Canoe Club for their evening session.
There’ll be both flatwater and whitewater options, so whether you fancy something relaxed or want to get stuck into some moving water, there should be something for everyone.
It’s also a brilliant opportunity to paddle somewhere different, meet some other paddlers and enjoy another club’s session.

*FRIDAY 4th SEPT – ANDY OUGHTON’S FUNERAL*
As many members will know, we recently lost our friend, coach and fellow paddler Andy Oughton.
Andy’s funeral will take place on:
*📅 Friday 4th September*
*⏰ 13:00*
*📍 Countesthorpe Crematorium*
The wake will follow afterwards at Countesthorpe Village Hall.
Andy’s family have kindly asked anyone planning to attend to complete the short form below. This will help them get an idea of numbers attending — and, importantly, make sure there is enough flapjack for everyone, which feels particularly fitting. ❤️

*GUARD OF HONOUR FOR ANDY*
There is also set to be a Guard of Honour for Andy as his funeral procession arrives at the crematorium.
Paddlers attending are invited to bring a paddle with them, which we will use to form an honour guard tunnel for Andy’s procession.
For somebody who gave so much of his life to paddling and to the wider outdoor community, it will be a very fitting way for us to come together and pay their respects.
So, if you are attending and are able to, please bring a paddle with you.
*ANDY’S CONDOLENCE BOOK*
For anyone who would like to leave a message, memory or condolence for Andy and his family, his online condolence book remains available here:
Whether you knew Andy for many years or simply crossed paths with him through paddling, please do feel able to add something.

*SATURDAY – FREE PENNYWORT PICK & EDUCATION SESSION*
On Saturday morning we’re at the club from 10:00 for our next Floating Pennywort Removal Session.
And remember — this session is Free!
These sessions give members a free session on the water while helping us tackle one of the biggest threats to our home waters, Invasive Non-Native Floating Pennywort.
Floating Pennywort spreads incredibly quickly, damages habitats, restricts navigation and, if left unchecked, can make large areas of the river almost unusable during the summer.
So this isn’t just a litter pick with boats!
It’s a chance to:
* Learn more about the river and the invasive species affecting it
* Get out for a paddle
* Spend a social morning with other members
* Do something genuinely useful for our home water
* Learn more about environmental stewardship along the way
*
No charge — just come along, get involved and help us make a difference.

*💗💙 AND THEN NEXT WEEK… THE WATERSIDE PINK & BLUE OLYMPIC GAMES! 💙💗*
On Thursday 10th September, Waterside Canoe Club is getting behind the Turning Mountsorrel Pink & Blue Campaign, raising money for Cancer Research UK.
And obviously, we couldn't just quietly wear something pink or blue and leave it at that… 😂
🏆 So we're holding the *WATERSIDE PINK & BLUE OLYMPIC GAMES!*
Expect an evening of slightly ridiculous, unnecessarily competitive and hopefully very entertaining water and land-based games, finishing with a grand finale obstacle race!
Competitors will be randomly assigned to:
💗 TEAM PINK
or
💙 TEAM BLUE
…and then battle it out for Waterside glory!
Wear your team colour, embrace the silliness and come prepared to get involved.
And yes…
💦 You may get wet.
Actually, You probably will. 😂
📣 *YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE PADDLING TO COME ALONG!*
This is as much a social and fundraising evening as it is a paddling event.
So even if you're not competing, please come down and support it.
Bring family and friends, cheer people on, laugh at the inevitable chaos and help us create a brilliant club evening while raising money for an incredibly worthwhile cause.
Members and non-members are very welcome, so please spread the word!
*📅 Thursday 10th September*
*⏰ 18:00–19:30*
*📍 Waterside Canoe Club*
*💗 All funds raised from the event will go to Cancer Research UK.*
*👉 Full details & sign-up:*
*https://watersidecc.myclubhouse.co.uk/Events/Calendar/View?id=970*
⚠️ Competitors need to sign up by MIDNIGHT on Tuesday 8th September so that we can organise the games and balance Team Pink and Team Blue.
After such a long message, It feels like it’s a week that perhaps sums up club life particularly well, getting out and enjoying our sport together, supporting other paddlers, looking after the river we call home, raising money for an important cause and, most importantly, being there for one another when it matters.
Whether you’re joining us tonight on the Trent, heading to HPP on Thursday, paying your respects to Andy on Friday, pulling Pennywort from the Soar on Saturday or turning up dressed head-to-toe in pink or blue Next Week…
Thank you for being part of WCC 🩷

🩷💙 WATERSIDE IS GOING PINK & BLUE! 💙 🩷
This September, Waterside Canoe Club is getting behind Turning Mountsorrel Pink & Blue Campaign, helping the village raise money for Cancer Research UK.
And obviously… we couldn’t just quietly wear a bit of pink and blue and leave it at that.
Introducing the Waterside Pink & Blue Olympic Games!
Thursday 10 September 2026
18:00–19:30
Members and non-members are both very welcome to join in the fun, so please don’t think this is only for regular club paddlers. If you fancy coming along, getting involved, cheering people on and supporting the fundraising, we’d love to see you.
All funds from the event are being donated to CRUK !
We’re planning an evening of slightly ridiculous, highly competitive and hopefully very entertaining water and land-based games, finishing with a grand finale obstacle race.
And yes…
You may get wet.
Actually, it’s Waterside. You definitely will !
Everyone who signs up to compete will be randomly allocated to either:
🩷 TEAM PINK
or
💙 TEAM BLUE
Once you know your colour, we’d LOVE you to embrace it!
T-shirt, shorts, tutu, headband, face paint, socks, wig… whatever you fancy. Be creative! The pinker and bluer we can get around the club, the better the photographs are going to look.
Don’t have anything in your team colour? No problem at all — we’ll have other ways of identifying the teams.
??Want to compete?
Please sign up by Midnight Tuesday 8th September.
We need to close competitor entries then so our events team has enough time to organise the games, balance the teams and let everyone know whether they’re fighting for Pink or Blue glory!
Can’t make the start at 18:00? Don’t worry — come along and join in when you can.
And if competing really isn’t your thing, we still want you there!
Come down, support us, cheer very loudly, laugh at the inevitable chaos and help us create a brilliant evening for a very worthwhile cause.
Most importantly, throughout the campaign we’ll be raising money for Cancer Research UK.
Every donation — large or small — helps.
Scan the QR code on our campaign poster to donate in advance or on the day.
Let’s get Waterside behind this, have some fun and help Turn Mountsorrel Pink & Blue!
