Prime Michael Essien or Prime Xabi Alonso?

Two elite midfielders.

Two completely different ways of controlling a football match.

Essien was power, intensity and destruction. He won the ball, covered ground, drove forward and could change the feel of a game with a tackle, a run or a shot from distance.

At his best, he was the midfielder you wanted when the game became a battle.

Alonso was control, range and intelligence. He could sit deep, dictate the tempo and find passes that seemed to see spaces before anyone else.

He did not need to chase the game.

He could make the game come to him.

Essien gave you force.

Alonso gave you control.

Essien could dominate the physical battle.

Alonso could dominate the rhythm.

Both were elite.

Just in very different languages of midfield football.

The Blackpool Incident: The Dent on a Beautiful Diamond

Tommy Docherty’s Chelsea Diamonds were one of the most exciting young sides in English football.

They had pace. They had flair. They passed the ball beautifully.

By April 1965, the Diamonds were still shining brightly.

The League Cup was in the bag. The FA Cup was still within reach. The First Division title was there too.

Then came Blackpool.

After a tiring defeat at Anfield, Docherty gave his players two days by the seaside.

Eight players slipped out through a fire exit for drinks.

They returned in the early hours.

The Doc found out.

And the Diamond took a blow.

Barry Bridges, George Graham, Marvin Hinton, John Hollins, Eddie McCreadie, Bert Murray, Terry Venables and Joe Fascione were sent home.

William Sinclair and James Smart were called up.

Then came Turf Moor.

Burnley 6, Chelsea 2.

The beautiful Diamond had been taken apart.

The treble was gone.

Then the double.

Then the championship dream.

And Chelsea would wait another 40 years to lift the league title.

Was Docherty right to send them home, or was this the dent that changed everything?

Dean Saunders sent a get-well note to Elliott after the tackle:

"Just a note to wish you luck in your recovery. Nobody was more disappointed than me. I can promise you there was no MALICE intended. Hope you are kicking me soon.”

But former Arsenal manager Bertie Mee saw the incident very differently.

"It was a c0ward's tackle in that he knew what he was doing.”

Saunders insisted there was no malice.

Mee believed he knew exactly what he was doing.

Work on your game. Work on yourself. Make yourself impossible to ignore.

You don't become a big player by waiting for the perfect opportunity. You become one by being ready when the opportunity comes.

Gianfranco Zola on Why He Loved English Football

Gianfranco Zola once explained one of the biggest differences he noticed between Italian and English football.

“In Italy, we are used to it being either very good or very bad, and it all depends on the result. Here... as long as you go on the pitch and you give your best for your team, they love you and they support you all the time.”

Perhaps that is part of why Zola became so loved at Chelsea.

He understood that Stamford Bridge appreciated more than goals and trophies. Give everything for the shirt, and the supporters would give you their backing.

Zola gave Chelsea exactly that.

Enzo Fernandez said he had “always dreamed of playing for a big club like Manchester City.”

That sounds straightforward enough.

But was Manchester City really the big-club destination Enzo had in mind?

Earlier this year, Enzo made no secret of his admiration for Real Madrid. He spoke about his desire to live in Madrid, and his comments were serious enough to create tension at Chelsea.

The destination he appeared to have in mind was Madrid.

Real Madrid, however, were not interested in signing him.

And now he is at Manchester City.

That brings us to the question that interests me.

Has Manchester City actually become a bigger club than Chelsea?

Because if Enzo's argument is that he has left Chelsea for a bigger club, then we need to establish what makes City bigger.

Is it the Premier League titles?

City have certainly dominated English football in the modern era.

Is it European success?

Chelsea have won the Champions League twice. Manchester City have won it once.

Chelsea have also won the Europa League twice, the Cup Winners' Cup twice and the UEFA Super Cup twice. In 2025, Chelsea became the first club to complete the set of all five major UEFA men's club competitions.

Is it history?

Chelsea have been a major force in English and European football for decades, long before Manchester City's modern transformation.

There is no question that Manchester City are now one of the most powerful and successful clubs in world football.

But bigger than Chelsea?

That is a different argument.

City's recent dominance has been extraordinary, but football clubs are not judged solely by what they have achieved over the last decade.

Chelsea have European history, major trophies, global recognition and a place among the established giants of English football.

So perhaps Enzo's move tells us more about the current strength of Manchester City's football project than it does about Chelsea's position in football history.

But if Enzo Fernandez believes he has left Chelsea for a bigger club, I have one simple question:
