When you joined your local bowls club, who knew that you also joined a national and international bowling community??! Bowlers can’t go on holiday for too long before they start feeling twitchy and need a bowling fix, and with a secret nod and handshake they are welcomed into the nearest bowls club. In the past we’ve had bowlers from around the country and internationally pop by for a game and these two are Pat and Andra from Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club who rolled up with us tonight at our weekly social evening. I wonder what they thought of our little club compared to their 500-person-beach-view-mega-club?! We always welcome a member exchange and love hearing about other clubs, so hope to see you all soon fellow bowlers 🤝.

Since vandals smashed all our windows in winter when we were closed, we have been boarded up and in the dark about when renovations will begin… a bit like buses, you wait for ages and then they all come at once! The CoL have decided to do a full renovation (hasn’t been done since 2006, see plaque) on top of replacing the windows, there’ll be new fire and security alarms, CCTV, security grills and a new kitchen plus upgraded watering system for the green. We are in full packing mode and will have no access to either pavilion for 3 weeks. All public bowling is cancelled except Parlez: Women only bowling night on Tuesday, which will go ahead as planned but it is SOLD OUT. Members can still bowl but there will be no matches and no cups of tea ☕️.
Just picking up a few nectar points

Parlez: our women only bowling evening on Tuesday 7 July is SOLD OUT.
The next one is Tuesday 4 Aug and the final one of the season will be on 1 September, don’t miss them!
Unlike tenpin bowling balls or pétanque balls which are round, lawn bowls have a bias cut into one side so they roll with a curve. Think of them as wheel which will always fall into the biased side and curve in that direction. The bias is always the side with the smaller circle. It means that you don’t aim for the ‘jack’ (the white target ball), you have to aim to the side. You can bowl forehand or backhand, just remember to check your bias!
