Despite being domesticated humans living in linear cages where we can’t see the bars, our bodies, brains and hormones resonate with the natural world we once thrived in.
Ground sitting provides an opportunity to unlock those cages with invisible bars and unravel the normalised structures of modernity, allowing us to primally prime ourselves for the ever-changing experience we call life.

Now, I thrive in my fifties, engaging in ultra-endurance activities and recovering to do it all over again the next day. I attribute this level of resilience and vitality to my commitment to ground sitting, which has become a form of rehabilitation—a way to enhance my posture and liberate my joints.
This practice not only enables me to maintain mobility but also reinforces the idea that our bodies are designed to move freely and dynamically.
Interestingly, longevity studies suggest that one of the best indicators of age is how well we can get up from the floor. But if we cannot even manage to get down to the floor with ease in the first place, it raises significant questions about our physical capabilities and overall health.
After all, the absence of ease is dis-ease.
By choosing to engage with the ground, we shift the originally perceived discomfort to a position of comfort and ease and enable ourselves to remain comfortable in our bodies as we meet the demands of life as we age.

Hormetic stress and neuroplasticity:
These are the twin engines of human evolution, representing the body’s ability to turn inconvenience into ‘upgraded hardware’.
Hormesis is the biological phenomenon where a brief, controlled dose of a stressor—which would be toxic or even fatal in high doses—triggers a massive cellular repair and strengthening response. Our ancestors lived in a constant state of hormetic flux: they faced extreme hot or cold (thermal stress), long periods without
food (metabolic stress) and intense physical exertion (mechanical stress).
In our modern environment, we have mistaken comfort for safety. By intentionally introducing hormetic stressors we trigger the survival genes that have remained dormant in our DNA. This process tells our brain that the body is being tested and must therefore level up, sharpening our metabolic flexibility.
This, my longevity-seeking friends, is the physiological foundation of longevity.
While hormesis upgrades our ‘cellular hardware’, neuroplasticity is the process of rewiring our ‘neural software’. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections in response to new experiences or challenges. In the ancestral context, learning the extreme skills required to hunt, forage or build shelter wasn’t an academic exercise; it was a neuroplastic necessity.
The modern tragedy is that our brains are still plastic, but they are currently moulding to a world of comfort and convenience.
To reverse this, we must engage in lean-in learning. When we choose the inconvenient path we are using directed neuroplasticity.
This makes resilience a ‘default setting’ rather than an exhausting effort.
When you combine hormetic stress with directed neuroplasticity, you create a longevity powerhouse.
This is how the cliff diving legend, that is Rob, conquered his biggest fear, became more resilient, more focused and more alive.
This process didn’t happen over night, it started when Rob started .
