☀️ Hot weather doesn't just affect your dog's body... it affects their behaviour too!
When we think about keeping dogs safe in the heat, we often focus on preventing heatstroke. But there are a few behavioural changes that are just as important to be aware of...
🌡️ Heat fills your dog's 'stress bucket'
Hot weather places extra demands on your dog's ability to cope, making them more irritable, less tolerant and more easily frustrated than usual.
Give them a little more space, avoid overwhelming situations, and supervise interactions with children and other dogs more carefully.
😴 Lethargy doesn't mean they're comfortable
A quiet dog may simply have less energy to communicate how they're feeling. They might skip the subtle warning signs when uncomfortable, like moving away or growling, and react more suddenly instead. And... just because they may be quieter than usual, do not assume any behavioural struggles have disappeared!
🍲Eating less can be completely normal
Many dogs naturally have a reduced appetite in hot weather, as they don't need to burn as many calories to regulate their body temperature.
🛑Dogs don't always know when to stop
Many will still chase a ball, go for their usual walk or lie in the sunshine simply because it's what they always do - not because it's safe.
Understanding how heat affects your dog's behaviour, not just their body, can help you to keep them safer, happier and better able to cope throughout the summer.
If you found this useful, please share it with another dog owner 💚

WE WON! This isn’t a trophy - it’s a dog welfare MOVEMENT! The biggest shock to be surprised at London Vet Show with the presentation of the Dog Friendly Winners award for the second year running! Why is this award so important? Because it’s voted by pet owners! In fact, 1,300 pet owners voted for Behavet because of the results they’ve achieved. Why do we care so much? It inspires other owners to know results are possible and, most importantly, with reward-based, ethical and expert methods! This award isn’t a piece of wood, it’s a welfare movement for the good of dogs! Thank you to everyone who was part of making that happen 💚💚💚💚💚
