Summer comes with an assumption that everyone is out and up for it. For anyone grieving, that can make it the heaviest stretch of the year.
We sat down with Amber Jeffrey, founder of The Grief Gang, whose mum’s anniversary falls in June.
“I often call it my metaphorical or internal winter. You’re allowed to be in your metaphorical winter and know your bloom might come in the autumn instead.”
She also talks about the guilt that turns up when you laugh again, and what she wishes more people understood about supporting a grieving friend. Her answer to that one has stayed with us. It’s better to be told no than to never ask.
Send it to someone who might need it.

Meet Maria, our community executive.
She joined The Hearth a year and a half ago. She looks after the members and the day-to-day life of the space, and makes sure everyone feels held while they’re here.
We asked her what The Hearth is really about, and what it means to be part of it. Have a watch.

Ever been on the edge of saying something real, and swallowed it down instead?
Authentic Relating is a set of practices for having more honest, connected conversations. Saying what you actually mean, hearing what someone else actually means, without the small talk getting in the way, and without needing to self-abandon or over-perform to stay in connection.
On Wednesday 16 September, Nicole Bosky is at The Hearth teaching five foundational practices you can use with anyone you want, anytime, anywhere.
Nicole is a Somatic Experiencing therapist and Authentic Relating practitioner who works with women leaders on nervous system regulation and honest communication.
6:30 to 9pm at The Hearth. Limited tickets for Hearth Members, £45 general admission, £40 low income. Link in bio to book.
Meet Eva, who leads grassroots marketing at The Hearth.
She started here in 2024 as event staff, and has done a bit of everything since.
She spends most of her time thinking about how women find us, and how we welcome them in when they do.
We asked her what a women’s space actually is, and why it matters. Have a watch.

This Wednesday at The Hearth.
As a young girl in Afghanistan, Zahra Joya dressed as a boy so she could go to school. She went on to study law, become a journalist, and start her own media company. When the Taliban returned in 2021, decades of progress vanished overnight.
Now living in exile in London, she refuses to stay silent.
Zahra will be in conversation with co-author and journalist Amie Ferris-Rotman about their new book The Vanishing Girl of Kabul, a memoir and a rallying cry for women whose rights are being stripped away.
Two days to go. Link in bio to book.
Meet Oi Leng, the woman behind The Hearth.
She studied anthropology, and in a way she never stopped.
She spends most of her days here, listening to the women who come through our doors, and it shapes everything we do.
We asked her why she built this place, and what it really is. Have a watch.
