Our role as coaches is to help them become confident thinkers who can solve problems for themselves.
Instead of simply giving commands, we help children understand their options.
We ask questions. We encourage them to think. We give them the confidence to make decisions.
Growth is always the goal. Basketball is the tool to get there.

Nothing means more to us than hearing how children are growing in confidence, finding joy in being active and feeling part of our community.
These words remind us why we do what we do. 🫶
Basketball is the tool. Community is the foundation. Growth is the goal.
When children enjoy sport, they stay in sport.
And when they stay in sport, that’s where confidence grows, friendships form, and lifelong habits begin.

Basketball is the tool. Growth is the goal.
The chances of a girl becoming an Olympian are 0.0003%.
But when girls stay involved in sport, something powerful happens.
They are 70% more likely to step into leadership roles later in life.
Their risk of disease drops by 45%.
And their confidence and ability to achieve their goals increases by 50%.

Let’s encourage more girls to play sports.

What if youth sport focused more on the child than the result?
What if we’ve been making youth sport harder than it needs to be? How do we make sport better for children? It starts with this. 👉
01. We let them explore.
The best way to encourage intrinsic motivation is to let children explore and find activities that align with their natural talents. We don’t turn every session into a high-pressure competition where winning is the only thing that matters. Instead, we celebrate curiosity, effort and enjoyment. Because children who enjoy sport are far more likely to stay active for life.
02. We value children for who they are, not what they achieve.
Every child deserves to feel supported, encouraged and appreciated regardless of results. Our role as coaches, parents and role models is not to decide what a child should love. It’s to help them discover what lights them up and give them the confidence to pursue it.
03. We teach children how to lose.
Sport gives young people something incredibly valuable: The opportunity to fail safely and learn from it.
Some days we win. Some days we don’t. But every experience can teach resilience, courage, patience and persistence. These are, for us, some of the most important lessons - it’s a chance to develop character.
04. We don’t focus solely on basketball.
Our sessions are designed to develop physical literacy alongside basketball skills. Children build coordination, agility, balance, strength, body awareness and confidence in movement. These foundations help young people not only in basketball, but in every sport and every stage of life.
05. We put community before profit.
London City Ballers was built because we care deeply about young people and the future of our community.
We’re community-driven, not money-driven. That’s why we’re fundraising to improve court safety and facilities for children and families across South London. Because creating opportunities for the next generation is something we do together.
We’re not just building basketball sessions.
We’re building confidence. We’re building belonging. We’re building opportunities. And together, we’re creating something special for the future.

And feel free to share this with someone you think would enjoy being part of the London City Ballers community.
Hopping and jumping help children develop:
🎲 balance and body awareness
🎲 coordination and rhythm
🎲 landing mechanics and control
🎲 power and explosiveness
🎲 confidence moving in different directions
And many of these skills transfer directly into basketball movements such as:
⛹️ changing direction
🏃 accelerating and stopping
🏀 rebounding
🙌 shooting
↔️ defensive movement
For young children, movement comes before sport-specific skills.
The stronger their movement foundation, the easier it becomes to learn and enjoy the game later on.
At London City Ballers, we don’t just teach basketball skills. We develop physical literacy, confidence and a lifelong relationship with movement.
