We'd love to welcome you to our studio in Clapham for a free trial of one or more of our dance classes. Classes are held at all levels of training up to Advanced 1 Vocational Graded Exam level from complete beginners of any age, (starting from age 3). Children or adults with disabilities are welcome, and we think dancing should be for EVERYONE, so have a policy that if three or more children from the same family attend during any term, you only pay for the first two. There are classes for those who want to get fit, have fun and make new friends, release some stress, or at the other end of the scale, aspire to a career in dance. Why not try a class, or contact us to see if there are any extra activities you can join in, (e.g. Christmas Party, theatre outing, watching a school show), to get a feel for our classes.

Does your child have difficulty focussing on activities? Need help with attention span?

An activity that brings rewards through performing, achievement awards and even just mastering a movement can give a child a good reason to commit to regular practise when encouraged. Sometimes it's even the thought of wearing a certain costume after reaching the required level.

Every child is different, but every good dance teacher loves the challenge of making that child work their brain and body for themselves and their own motivation.

Does your child really need physical exercise? πŸƒβ€βž‘οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈπŸ€Όβ€β™€οΈ

This excerpt is taken from a medical journal of yesteryear, describing a magic pill that can cure all kinds of ills and prevent many chronic diseases. Then, the punchline: "There is no such pill, it's called 'Exercise'. πŸƒβ€βž‘οΈπŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈπŸ€Όβ€β™€οΈπŸŽΆπŸŽ΅πŸ©°

Your active 5 year old may not look in need of exercise, but doing physical activities (and not everyone has the character to enjoy competitive sports), sets up a life-long enjoyment of using your body that can only be good for your health later in life. ❀️ (Not to mention that through dance, you're also expressing yourself, using your imagination and making connections through teamwork and the formalities of classes.🎢🎡🩰🎭

Great to be back! 🎢🎡🎭🩰

(Even though we had a long. and hopefully productive, conversation with our teenagers, about teamwork, mindset, attending rehearsals regularly so as not to spoil a dance 🎢🎡🎭🩰 for the others in it who won't have a clue about their spacing and pattern if suddenly an extra body appears .etc. .. with the help of a parent. Thank you Layla's Mum Nadia)! πŸ’πŸ’πŸ’

Are you worried about your child's self-esteem?

If your child is lacking confidence, dancing can be a way to build self-esteem. Everyone's body and brain is unique, so they'll meet people of all abilities. One child will find a particular movement easy, but another step difficult - and EVERYONE is in the same boat, finding things easy at times, hard at others, because dancing requires a range of physical, mental and creative effort.

Taking exams, performing in Shows, (or just to classmates) and mastering movements that were unknown or impossible some time before, all lead to confidence and a sense of achievement.

What's more, these benefits can be life-long, as even if your child dances for a few years and then has a totally unrelated career and hobbies, they'll never lose those memories and emotional 'muscle memory' after having those happy feelings. Of course, you need a dance school that has good, rigorous teaching, but that isn't overly competitive and nurtures each child as an individual, developing those memories through teacher and peer kindness, understanding and teamwork.

All the exercises we do with little ones prepare them for avoiding injury with more advanced work; that's why it's so important to get things right to start with.

If your child is an enthusiastic mover 🀸and you aren't sure which dance class or other physical activity to send them to, make sure the teachers are qualified by a recognised body: ISTD or RAD, that has rigorous training procedures and examined qualifications for teachers. 🎢🎡🎭🩰

If a class is registered with that body, you'll also be sure, without doing your own research, that they are genuinely insured and follow good Safeguarding practice. 🎢🎡🎭🩰

Most children benefit from the confidence and social skills they gain while learning to dance and aren't interested in pursuing a career. It can really help teenagers though, when they're going through a time of change with stressful exams, to have commitment to an enjoyable hobby where they can vent their feelings through music, using energy and self-expression. If they haven't been taught well when younger though, they'll struggle and become disheartened with more advanced work.🎢🎡🎭🩰

Why not drop us a quick email ([email protected]) and come along to a free trial class in Clapham SW8 (near Lavender Hill, Battersea, SW11). 🎢🎡🎭🩰

Wondering how to help your shy pre-school child?
Try a dance class where children are gently encouraged to make friends by taking turns and using partners and patterns as initial ways of interacting with other children.
A good dance class will also use imagination and gently encourage children to perform individual steps, perhaps in pairs or individually. 🎢🎡🎭🩰

Are you worried that your child won't want to join the class if you can't be present too?
We encourage children to dance with Mum or Dad waiting outside the studio if possible, as then their attention isn't divided between teacher and parent, but at Acacia, we have a more individual approach as we recognise that all children are different.

Some will want to watch for a few minutes (or even a few weeks) before joining in, and it is worth persevering, as it doesn't mean they won't love dancing - just that they need a little more confidence.

Others will need Mum or Dad to watch them to begin with, or even join in with them. (Some may even push their parent out of the door)! It's best to let the child take the lead, and not be too insistent when at the class, while getting them used to the routine of activities with others being great fun by an enthusiastic attitude yourself. They may never dance 'Swan Lake', but their experience will help them when joining in new activities at any age! 🎢🎡🎭🩰
