The Shala School of Yoga

The Shala School of Yoga Yoga Teacher Training & Retreats The Shala was founded by Gingi Lee in 1997, as one of London's first dedicated yoga centres.

In 2014, the Shala expanded and took over a newly refurbished space in a Victorian warehouse in West Norwood, on the fringes of West Dulwich. And in 2016, it developed a well respected teacher training programme. The beautiful purpose-built new centre incorporates three light-filled studios, a therapy room, reception, changing facilities and a small coffee bar for post-practice coffee. There daily classes encompassing a range styles including ashtanga, vinyasa flow, Mysore self practice, yin and restorative and Jivamukti yoga. The centre is just minutes from West Norwood overground station and is easily accessible from South London's surrounding neighbourhoods including Clapham, Balham, Brixton, Tulse Hill, Herne Hill, Dulwich, Crystal Palace, Forest Hill and Croydon. There are direct train links from Victoria and London Bridge, various buses and cycle racks and free parking nearby. The space is a sanctuary, peaceful, but vibrant and always warm and welcoming. A dedicated yoga space in which to enhance and develop physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. A place to roll out your mat, be part of a community, share, heal and grow. Our teachers all share a deep love and respect for yoga and have a passion for sharing their knowledge and for training a new generation of teachers. Shala classes place an emphasis on encouraging students to develop an individual practice. Our ethos will always be centred around forming a close personal touch on all that we do. Being independent, sharing the love of the practices, and having a positive connection with like-minded people. The centre is also a hub for new life with classes for pregnant women, mother & baby, kids yoga, and teens yoga and a range of workshops from Aerial Yoga to Sound Baths and Breath Work.

Teaching can be one of the most connected roles in the room… and one of the loneliest outside of it.

Our Yoga Teacher's Circles - Saha Gatherings were created as a space for yoga teachers to come back into connection — with each other, with their teaching, and with themselves.

A place to share openly, reflect honestly, and belong to a community where don't need to be the teacher.

In October we have two gatherings, one in studio with Gingi Lee and Kookie Punam Gill on 3 October. The other online with Melanie Cooper & Jennie Wadsten Sharma for those not able to come into the studio.

£20 per session

Would you teach differently if you felt more supported?

Magic happens in the room when voices come together.

A little moment with Gingi and our students that felt too lovely not to share. 🤍

Sometimes the practice isn’t quiet.

Pregnancy lasts about ten months. Perimenopause and menopause can last a decade or more.

If you're teaching women in their 40s, 50s and 60s, that's likely a significant part of who's is in your classes, moving through one of the longest physiological transitions a body goes through. Most of us qualified with barely a passing mention of the this life stage or the toll it can take on women.

Our Menopause Yoga Toolkit with Dina Cohen is a one-day course to help close that gap in knowledge for many teachers. Evidence-informed, and grounded in Dina's own decades of teaching and her lived experience of her "second spring," it covers the hormonal, physical and emotional shifts of the transition, and how to adapt your practice and your teaching around them.

You'll leave with a fuller toolbox for the symptoms your students raise most often, and the language to hold space for them, on the mat and off.

28 November, in studio with an online intro session the evening before. Send us a DM or visit the link in our bio to find out more.

Lightness & joy.

Yoga training and the path inward can be serious, questioning what you think you know and being continously open to change and evolution . But along the way on our trainings, there's always intense joy, laughter and lightness.

These are some of the words our recent 200 graduates used to describe their experience with us.

Your 200-hour gave you the foundations. But teaching often brings up a whole new set of questions.

Beyond the Postures is for teachers who are ready to go deeper, explore what sits beyond asana and develop a clearer sense of who they are becoming as a teacher.

This 60-hour Core Module sits at the heart of our 300-hour pathway, led by Gingi Lee, Melanie Cooper, Charli Van Ness, Kookie Punam Gill and Jennie Wadsten Sharma

Lineage is a word that gets complicated — invoked to claim authority, or avoided because of how it's been misused.

For us, it's simple: who taught you, who taught them, what's being carried forward. Naming it respects where ideas come from — what's adapted, what's ours, what isn't. The teachings we work with weren't invented by us. They aren't owned.

Our teacher trainers carry a broad lineage of teachers who came before them — interweaving it with their own experience, not replacing it. We sit at the crossroads of tradition and contemporary.

While we are on this earth, our breath is always with us. But learning how to work with it is another practice entirely.

Sacred Breath is an eight-session exploration of pranayama with Melanie Cooper, bringing ancient teachings into conversation with what we now understand about breathing and the nervous system.

Come away with a deeper personal practice and the confidence to begin sharing breathwork with others.

Learning how to support new parents takes more than knowing which poses to offer. It’s also about creating a space where they can soften, connect and feel supported.

A few words from teachers who have trained with Alexa Dean.

Our Postnatal Baby & Me Yoga Teacher Training returns this October, with two days of small-group, hands-on learning at The Shala.
