Yoga Teacher Training & Retreats The Shala was founded by Gingi Lee in 1997, as one of London's first dedicated yoga centres.

In 2014, the Shala expanded and took over a newly refurbished space in a Victorian warehouse in West Norwood, on the fringes of West Dulwich. And in 2016, it developed a well respected teacher training programme. The beautiful purpose-built new centre incorporates three light-filled studios, a therapy room, reception, changing facilities and a small coffee bar for post-practice coffee. There daily

Often used to mean well-structured – peak pose, preparation, counterpose, the architecture of a class.

That's definitely part of it. But intelligent sequencing also asks: intelligent for whom, on what day, toward what? A sequence that's beautifully planned out in your notebook can land badly in a room of frayed bodies on a gloomy evening in February.

The intelligence isn't only in the structure, it's also in the reading of who's actually in front of you, and the willingness to adjust. We need structure and we need planning in teaching yoga, but we also need flexibility and adaptability.

Our 200 and 300 hour programmes covers the architecture of how to build a class, but more than that, it's about learning to teach the class the room actually needs.

Each group of students we take on a 200 hour journey, has its own distinct identity.

This spontaneous moment in time captures the spirit of what this amazing all-female 2024-2025 cohort would get up to when we were taking a break!

It’s not always like this on trainings, but it was a regular occurence with these wild and free and joyous ladies who had definitely released all inhibitions by the end of their training πŸ˜‰

There comes a point for every teacher where it's no longer just about *what* you teach, but how* you teach.

Beyond Asana – The Inner Path of Teaching Yoga is designed to help you deepen and refine how you teach yoga, and reconnect with purpose. From holding space and authentic expression to ethics, dharma, boundaries, recognising cultural bias and so much more, this core 300-hour module invites you to reevaluate your how* and fundamentally evolve as a teacher.

We live in a city that rarely slows down.

Concrete underfoot, phones in hand, minds already three steps ahead.

Mindful barefoot walking is one way back. Back to sensation. Back to presence. Back to the simple act of feeling the earth beneath you. Here students on our retreat are exploring this in the beautiful countryside of East Sussex.

This simple practice, can help regulate the nervous system, improve balance, and reconnect you to your body in a way shoes and speed often take away.

No destination. Just each step, fully felt.

The phrase tends to land in one of two places: dismissed as metaphor, or treated as literal anatomy with chakras mapped onto organs.

We view the subtle body as a framework β€” koshas, nadis, vayus, chakras β€” developed over centuries to describe experiences that practitioners kept having and needed language for. It's not tangible anatomy. It's also not nothing. It's a map of inner experience, and like any map, its usefulness is in whether it can help you find your way.

On the 300-hour we explore these frameworks, where they come from, what they're useful for, and where their edges are. This allows you to teach from them without overstating what they are, and without diluting what they offer.

Helena graduated from our 200 hour Teacher Training last year and recently returned to speak with this year's prospective students at our Open Day.

She was asked, "What were some of the things you weren't expecting to learn?"

Her answer wasn't about anatomy or sequencing. It was about how much you learn about yourself. She spoke about peeling back the layers of conditioning that have built up over the years, allowing you to reconnect with who you really are.

In her own words, "Honestly, it's life changing and I would never have anticipated that."

Sometimes the most unexpected part of teacher training isn't what you learn about yoga. It's what you learn about yourself.
