How to properly sit on a meditation cushion

So youâre ready to meditate. You dim the lights. Sit on your cushion. Close your eyesâŚand BAMâŚthere it is! The sudden urge to jump out of your seat. âI just want to get up and go somewhere! Anywhere but sit here!â Sound familiar?
The untrained mind is like a rebellious teenager. It just wants to run wild: âWho needs all this meditation nonsense?â It makes you feel restless and fidgety. But itâs okay; itâs normal at the start. And there are some things we can do to help.
If youâre not sitting comfortably the urge to get up is going to be strong. Find a good cushion or chair and make sure your knees are lower than hips. This helps spread your weight, taking the pressure of your lower back.
Try meditating after exercise or yoga. Burning off excess energy is a great way to prepare your mind and body for a moment of stillness.
But if you still find yourself feeling fidgety then donât worry. Remember itâs just another distraction. Itâs all part of your practice. Deal with it just like any other distraction. Notice it, let it go and return to the breath. If you donât resist it and just let it be, you might just find that ârestlessnessâ is not all itâs made out to be :)

Well, itâs just like a normal object. A real physical object. Okay, so most of the time itâs not physicalâŚa real figurative object!
We know that meditation isnât: âThink of nothing!â. Instead we use tricks and techniques to train our awareness. Meditation can also be thought of as attention training.
The way to do this is to focus on an what is called an object of meditation. There is an endless list of objects to choose from, but the most popular one is the breath. Some people choose other objects: a mantra or chant repeated in your head; physical feelings in the body; visual objects like a candle flame or a flower.
Whatever your object the process remains the same. Focus your attention on your object. Donât judge it or analyse it. When your mind wanders, notice, let go and return to your object. Itâs that easy!

"I meditate so that my mind cannot complicate my life" -Sri Chinmoy

Everyone thinks that the goal of meditation is to clear your mind. Stop all the thoughts! Well guess what? Thatâs actually totally impossible. The mind thinksâthatâs itâs job.
Thatâs why people get frustrated during meditation. They get distracted with thoughts and think theyâve failed. Au contraire! The real victory is in the noticing. Just notice when you become distracted. And when you do simply return to the breath. Itâs going to happen a lot. Itâs fine. Notice, let go and return...a million times. Every time you do itâs like a bicep curl for your brain. It literally changes your brain!
So donât worry if your mind drags you away. As soon as you notice, return again and put a check in the win column because youâre doing it right!

"Cool, but how do I actually meditate?" That's the number one question I get asked when I tell people about our meditation cushions.
It seems so distant but really the instructions couldn't be simpler. So we've put together a simple, nonsense-free how to meditate guide.
Check it out and you'll see how straightforward it really is. What's stopping you from meditating today?
