Lefroy Cup — The Epée Club As our summer season at Hurlingham comes to a close, a determined band of club members braved the scorched lawns and beating sunshine to compete in the Lefroy Cup. Rob and Sue Brooks, Theo Ayanwale, Al Barbasiewicz, Andrew Brannon, Steven Bateman, and Anton Pollard took to the piste.

A large number of Club members and their guests braved the sun-drenched lawns of the Hurlingham on Saturday to contest the 2026 edition of the Lavradio Cup.

We had thirteen fencers, which were split into two poules: one of 6 and one of 7.

Poule A comprised Alain Barbasiewicz, Steve Bateman and Andrew Brannon, along with guest fencers Lu Sadler, Jeremy Baker and Margot Krouwer. Poule B comprised defending champion John Prime, Anton Pollard and Mariette Mason, and guest fencers Alexandra Powell, Maxton Milner, Jolyon Hogarth Scott and Jeff Rosenbaum.

With 36 matches to get through, matches were fenced first to 5 hits in just 1 minute. Thirty of those matches were won on time, and 16 of them were decided by just one hit.

The top female fencer from each poule faced each other, with Lu Sadler beating Alexandra Powell 5-1.

Steve Bateman and Lu Sadler were promoted from Poule A, and Maxton Milner and John Prime from Poule B.

The final was contested by John and Maxton, with John managing to win 5-3 and retain the Cup.

The fencers were cheered on by a number of supporters, including Zoe, Owen and Eloise Bateman, Tony Bowran, Alex Brooks, Brian Hill, and President Emeritus David Partridge.

Notable mentions also go to Howard West who did a lot of the refereeing, as well as David Worsfield who performed the invaluable role of light-spotter.

Impressive performance by Epée Club members at the BVF National Championships — The Epée Club Epée Club members put on an impressive display at last weekends British Veteran’s Championships held in Bedford. Leading the way in defiant mood was Greg Allen with a silver medal in the Men’s Epée.

Colin and Danielle win back to back Epée Club Cups. — The Epée Club Sunday 14th dawned bright and early for those travelling to the Leon Paul Fencing Centre for the 2026 Epée Club Cup. With a few late withdrawals, 2 poules unique of 14 women and 19 men took to the piste for what was to prove a day of intense fencing.

Granddaughter presents trophy.
A chance meeting resulted in the granddaughter of Charles de Beaumont presenting the Inns of Court Gold Cup on Saturday at Hurlingham.

A brave band of 4 took to the piste in 30 deg. C temperatures at Hurlingham to compete for the Inns of Court Gold Cup. A twice round poule resulted in Al Barbasiewisz coming out the winner with Rob Brooks in second, Lawrence Burr in third and Sue Brooks in fourth. Supporting and keeping the Pimm's flowing was David Partridge, Ian Hunter, Anton Pollard, Brian Hill, with Pat Casey and Howard West as referees.

The Inns of Court Trophy was presented to Alain by Harriette Peel, Charles de Beaumont's granddaughter.
