The "Density per Square Meter" Trick Traditional rankings count "occupancy," that is, how many beds are occupied. If you take the Riviera Romagnola, you'll find a monstrous concentration of hotels, guesthouses, and beach resorts per square meter. It's a veritable factory of intensive tourism designed to cram millions of people into the same place. In the South and on the islands, this doesn't exist (fortunately).
