Progressive overload is the most important aspect of training if your goal is to build muscle or get that "toned" look!
By lifting heavier (or doing more reps, increasing intensity by adding tempo work, pulses etc) you'll create tiny amounts of muscle fibre damage. The body then repairs them by creating stronger & bigger fibres that can withhold more stress!
