Flashback Friday

Picture of former master/teacher and Old Finchleian George Robb alongside the late great Ferenc Puskás, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and the greatest Hungarian footballer ever.

On 25 November 1953, England lost 3–6 to Hungary. Originally, Tom Finney was selected at left wing, but due to injury before the game, Robb played in his place. Puskás scored 2 of the 6 goals, and right back that day was some fella called Alf Ramsey 😉

George Robb was one of the last footballers to successfully balance a sporting career with a profession in teaching. His dedication to education spanned nearly 40 years, notably serving as sports master at Christ’s College Finchley from 1952 to 1964. During this time, he contributed significantly to the school’s athletic programs, still a few current Old Finchleians members remember him well.

This coming season, four current Christ’s College Finchley masters/teachers will proudly continue the tradition by playing for different teams on Saturdays, and our development side is largely made up of Christ’s College Finchley students aged 16 and over.

The Old Finchleians Club has been at the heart of Finchley’s sports scene for 125 years next season.

Founded in 1901 by alumni of Christ’s College, Finchley, it is now a lively community of more than 800 members united by a love of sport, friendship, and local tradition.

Whether you’re a current student (16 plus), a former pupil of Christ’s College Finchley, a local sports fan, or simply looking for a welcoming place to play football, the Old Finchleians Club has something for you. Come along—on the pitch or at the heart of the Finchley community.

DM us or email [email protected] for more information in joining.

Due to demand, we are adding two new teams, bringing us to six Saturday teams for the 2026/27 season.

This means we need new kits and are looking to attract new sponsors for one or two of the new teams or for new pre- and post-wear for our first team.

If you or your company are interested in featuring your company logo and supporting an amateur football club that will celebrate its 125th anniversary this coming season, please send us a direct message for more information.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Manish Rawal last Friday.

During his time at Old Finchleians Manish was a fine sports man, playing as full back as high as the 2nd xi, successfully captaining 3rd xi to league and cups in mid 90s, also captaining the 1st team in cricket and after hanging up the bat and boots played Golf.

Manish welcomed all new and young players in both sports, as well as making everyone who knew him laugh and feel welcomed.

Manish will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him - our thoughts are with everyone who loved him and his family.

Currently we have no funeral arrangements to share, more information will follow.
