Africa’s big names get most of the attention. The Serengeti. Victoria Falls. The Okavango. Kruger.

But ask someone who has travelled overland what they remember, and the answer is often everything in between.

The roadside fruit stop. The border crossing that became a story. The tiny town you had never heard of. The view from the truck window. A sunset somewhere between two places on the itinerary. The people you met along the way.

That is the thing about overlanding. You don’t just arrive at Africa’s highlights. You get to travel the distance between them.

Safari isn’t only about game drives.

Sometimes it’s a warm afternoon beside Lake Malawi, shoes off, nowhere to be, and one of Africa’s great lakes stretching out in front of you.

That contrast is one of the best parts of travelling overland. Wildlife, cities, coastlines, mountains, and quiet corners like this all fold into the same journey.

A little less box‑ticking. A little more actually being there.

Where would you stop for an extra day?

After the forests of Bwindi, Lake Bunyonyi feels like a complete change of pace.

Green hills roll down towards the water, small islands dot the lake, and the road gives way to quieter hours along the shore.

It is exactly the kind of contrast that makes Uganda such an intriguing country to travel through. One day is all forest trails and wildlife, the next is boats, hills and a slower rhythm.

Uganda is firmly back on our travel list. Is it on yours?

So, what actually is an overland tour?

In simple terms, overlanding means travelling through a destination rather than flying from one highlight to the next.

With Acacia Africa, that means crossing from one country into another by road, watching the landscape change outside the window, stopping in places you might never have discovered on your own, and sharing the journey with a group of fellow like-minded travellers.

Yes, you will visit the big name places. The Serengeti. The Okavango Delta. Victoria Falls. Kruger. But overlanding is also about everything in between.

The roadside stops. The border crossings. The campfire evenings. The unexpected wildlife sightings. The long conversations on the road. The tiny towns you had never heard of before.

Because sometimes the journey really is as memorable as the destination.

Trade the road for the river! 🚣
Canoeing along the Orange River is one of those classic overland moments: calm water, big desert landscapes, rocky cliffs, sandy riverbanks and plenty of time to slow down between destinations.

It is not just about getting from one place to the next. It is about the swims, the paddles, the views, the campfire stories and the unexpected stops that make the journey unforgettable.

Experience the Orange River on selected Acacia Africa tours through Southern Africa, including our 11-day Cape Town to Namibia Accommodated Tour, currently on sale.
