What Happens Next? A Simple Guide to Starting Testogel or Testavan at The GHC
Once a patient receives their first Private prescription for Testogel or Testavan, you may think, what’s next? Here’s how our process works.
Picking Up The Prescription
Patients take their private prescription to a pharmacy of their choice — with many finding that larger supermarket pharmacies like Tesco or Asda often offer the most affordable prices.
The initial supply covers the period while their GP reviews the shared-care agreement (this can take up to 12 weeks).
Applying Testogel/Testavan
For those prescribed gel-based testosterone, it’s normally applied once each morning, often just after showering for convenience.
Application areas can
include the:
• Upper arms
• Shoulders
• Inner thighs
• Lower abdomen
Moving Into Shared Care
After receiving their clinical letter, patients usually contact their GP about a week later to request their NHS prescription.
If shared care isn’t possible, GHC provides a simple route to request an ongoing private prescription
online.
Blood Tests And Follow-Up
The first follow-up appointment takes place 6 months after starting testosterone gel.
Patients arrange blood tests before booking this appointment and apply their gel 4 hours before the blood draw to ensure accurate results.
Booking The Follow-Up
Once their results are ready, patients book their follow-up consultation through our online system — keeping everything streamlined and easy to manage.
This structured pathway helps ensure testosterone gel therapy remains safe, consistent, and well-supported throughout a patient’s
care.

Why Nurses Lead the Way at GHC
At GHC, we’re proud to be the UK’s first nurse-led and nurse-owned transgender hormone service.
Our nurses don’t just deliver care — they shape it.
From prescribing and monitoring treatment to presenting research on the European stage, they’re proving that nurse-led models can transform access and outcomes in trans healthcare.
Every presentation, every collaboration, every patient cared for moves us closer to a future where compassionate care is accessible to all.

Review - "I was so nervous for my face to face appointment, but Juan was lovely. He made me feel at ease immediately with his calm and friendly approach. He talked me through how to approach my GP for shared care, and answered all my questions. I'm so excited to start HRT and I can't wait to see my results"
