Roberto’s classes are full of the things that we sometimes forget are the bedrocks of human movement: crawling, jumping and most importantly, playing. The way he moves is as strong as it is fluid, seeing potential in every street corner, wall, or piece of apparatus offered to him. His quiet way of guiding movement almost tricks you into working hard.
His favourite spot in the neighbourhood is watching the water from above the canal at the beginning of the market, seeing the still water from somewhere he’s not supposed to be.

Taylor is Waking Dreams managing director, as well as being a pilates and yoga teacher, so she basically takes care of it all. Our Southern girl brings cheerleader pep with a little spice to her pilates, while her yoga centres around a more grounded, spiritual practice. It’s all about balance.
Speaking of balance, her favourite spot in the neighbourhood is The Dove. She loves having mates join for an evening class, before having a little post-class sesh to even things out.

Anton might seem just like a 10/10 cutie, but they are also a 10/10 smart mobility cookie. In their own practice, you’ll often find them upside down (though you may also find them covering a handstand class), but in classes their current passion is helping others unlock their hips.
Their favourite spot on the market is Pavilion. You’ll always find them with the same order: oat mocha with banana bread. Apparently it absolutely slaps.

Faith is part of the old guard at Waking Dreams. Before Waking Dreams moved in, some of you will remember the previous studio, Stretch. Her memories of the yoga studio at Ada Street extend back to practicing and then training in 2018 with some other familiar names to long-time Dreamers: Charley and Tamzin.
The names and deeds may have changed, but Faith’s beautifully fluid, creative classes continue to fill the studio on Sunday morning come rain or shine.

You’ll find Mayoor teaching his famous core and rings double on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
He got into coaching when he set up a calisthenic sports club at uni, ran it for the three years he was studying and fell in love with it. He wanted fitness to be something that was accessible to people after growing sick and tired of seeing 21-year-olds graduate with the health issues of 60-year-olds.
His favourite neighbourhood spot is his friend’s bakery, EK Bakery, which is tucked round behind the main market.

Lou is Waking Dreams’ restorative queen, although you may find her covering more dynamic practices too. A true advocate that a big, fat lie down can begin to solve a load of problems, she’s also a firm believer that the body knows what
it needs before the brain does when arriving on the mat.
Her favourite neighbourhood spot is The Dove, where she reckons she’s sunk more pints than anywhere else in the country.

Introducing: OUR PEOPLE. OUR PLACE.
By Liz Seabrook… photographer, yoga teacher, long-time dreamer 🌀
“A while ago I scribbled something in my notes about Waking Dreams being the centre of my village. I grew up in the countryside in a place where everyone knows everyone, and over time I began to miss that sense of place. The way that people smile at and greet each other in the neighbourhood, which at times feels suffocating, or like you’re in an episode of Sesame Street but also that you’re a part of something bigger than yourself.
I’ve been in East London for 15 years now, and I’ve been practicing yoga on Ada Street for nine of those. Between those walls I’ve found some of my closest friends, cried in savasana, cried on the street outside, laughed, hugged, played, trained, given up things and taken up others. I’ve seen teachers come and go, friends move on, and new ones arrive. Along the way, I realised that I’d found my community.
This is a series that I’ve wanted to make for a long time; photographing the teachers that form the constant inhale/exhale of the community within the neighbourhood that is home to it. In the time I’ve been coming to Waking Dreams I’ve transitioned from student to teacher (although I’ll always be a student), and knowing a little more of what it takes to stand up in front of a class, and make a living in this industry, reignited an urgency to make this work.
These people are some of my heroes – for one reason or another – and they deserve to be celebrated. My hope in my work is always that the person in front of my camera feels both seen and heard. I hope this work allows these brilliant folk to experience just that.” - Liz
This series will be rolling out right here on our Instagram.
Thank you Liz, for sharing your brilliant work and your story as well as celebrating the teachers that built this community.
