Lionel Messi joined PSG in 2021 without a single euro in transfer fees. His salary alone tells a completely different story.

Reports vary — L'Equipe said €30M net per season (€60M over two years). Le Parisien said €41M net per season (€82M over two years). Capology put his gross pay at over €63M annually.

However you slice it, PSG were paying somewhere between €60M and €90M net across those two seasons. For a player who left in tears, publicly unhappy the entire time.

"We came off two difficult years. My family was fine, but I didn't feel comfortable day to day or in training."

And here's the number that stings the most for PSG. His contract included a €110M loyalty bonus — completely untouched, because Messi never saw out the deal through to 2024.

That's a good sign for him personally. It doesn't tell us much else yet.

Here's the detail worth pointing out: Sandro Tonali, Tottenham's record £100m signing, didn't even make the squad for this game. Against a team missing most of its regular players. That's odd for a club-record signing, and it says something about how packed this squad now is.

Tottenham have spent big this summer. Tonali cost £100m from Newcastle. Fernandes cost £85m from West Ham. Savio cost £85m from Man City. Senesi joined free from Bournemouth. Marmoush is expected in on loan from Man City too, with a buy option reportedly around £50-60m.

That's not depth-building. That's a bet that the old identity was the problem, not just the guy at the top.

And look, maybe it's the right bet. Maresca's teams play patient, structured, possession-heavy football, and City clearly wanted a clean break from whatever the Pep decline looked like. Starting Lewis over Kovačić and Guéhi over Reis on merit, not reputation, is actually a defensible way to run a locker room.

But here's the part that should worry people who love this club's identity: continuity built City's dynasty. One manager, one system, over a decade.
