Tokei judo club began in 1975. It's moved a few times since then. Its now located just by London Bridge Station. This page is just about the Judo and BJJ.

The Tokei fitness centre has numerous other martial arts classes and a large gym. Some Japanese terms that people might find helpful as throws are usually described in their Japanese names...

No cats were harmed on day one of the new training schedule, but no gi does not mean naked, so he had to go...

6 to 7 was a deep dive into clinching, pummeling grabing the wrist(s), grabing the neck and situational drilling.

Then a quick water break. Some people stayed for part 2, some had to go, some others just came for part 2...

7-8 was more varied, but built on the last hour, good for stamina and fitness if you can do both and it ended with 30 mins sparing

But Monday is now all No-Gi

NOGI: Calling all beginners 📣

Our timetable now features a dedicated Intro to BJJ (Gi) class every Friday from 7–8pm 🥋

This structured programme is designed to guide students step by step through the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the gi. You’ll develop solid foundations in movement, escapes, positional control, submissions, and the core principles that make BJJ so effective.

Free sparring is kept to a minimum, allowing you to build confidence and develop good technique in a safe, supportive environment. With a favourable instructor-to-student ratio, you’ll receive plenty of individual coaching and feedback throughout the class.

Whether you’re completely new to martial arts or looking to build a stronger foundation in BJJ, this is the perfect place to start.

BJJ (GI): Calling all beginners 📣

Our timetable now features two beginner friendly classes!

Monday Evening: Intro to No-Gi class 6-7pm

The programme is structured to guide students step by step through No-Gi fundamentals, building skills progressively from movement and positional control to more advanced transitions and modern submission grappling concepts.

Free sparring is limited, allowing students to focus on technical development in a safe environment. With a favourable instructor-to-student ratio, each participant receives more individual feedback and support, making the class ideal for beginners and those who want a more guided learning experience.

If you’ve been looking to start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, there’s never been a better time.

Just a heads up that we’ll be moving to a new Jiu-jitsu timetable starting from Monday 13th July.

Until then, the current timetable will remain in effect, so please continue attending classes as normal until the new schedule begins on 13th July.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the mats.

Just one picture from Monday night of the 10 on the mat training with Liam Wandi that caused me a bit of a problem.

Q: How many lines are there in this photo?

There is a prize for the true answer…..

The problem:

There is, in my personal opinion, something deeply unsettling about this photo. Something like the uncertainty of Wittgenstein’s Duck-Rabbit, or one of Escher’s pictures (great exhibition that’s currently open at Somerset House till 6th September ) , or perhaps it is a manifestation of Freud’s ‘das Unheimliche’ that feeling of disquiet and uncomfortableness that occurs when something is simultaneously deeply familiar yet disturbingly not......... quite right , or even Masahiro Mori’s ‘uncanny valley’ seeing an AI image that’s really good but something is wrong (six fingers..?) but you can’t quite figure out what’s wrong……yet.

Then again perhaps I am just over analysing it… Liam a very structured and organised coach… other than his unhelpful tolerance of poor atomic crystal stacking structures...

Post judo and BJJ visit to the Nao Victoria on Saturday which was visiting at St Catherines Dock just 15 mins from the club.

It was the first bost to circumnavigate the globe in 1518-21, and the only one of Magellan's five ships to make it home fully laden with cloves, so it was definitely worth a small excursion

Copa Tokei 🥋

Highlights from one of the blue belt matches at our in-house competition last weekend.

Such a great opportunity for our players to learn under pressure and support our teammates. A great performance from both competitors.

On 6 June we held the first Copa Tokei, our in-house BJJ competition.

Three matches. Zero injuries. Lots of good Jiu-Jitsu, great sportsmanship, and plenty of smiles.

The goal was simple: give our students a chance to experience competition in a friendly, supportive environment. Everyone stepped up, tested themselves, and represented the club brilliantly.

A big thank you to everyone who took part and helped make it a success. Looking forward to the next one.
