If you sit at a desk all day and you stretch regularly but your back pain keeps coming back, this is why.
Static or passive stretching, holding a position for 20+ seconds temporarily increases the length of the muscle and can reduce tightness.
That's good but it won't stop your pain from coming back. To stop addressing the symptom rather than the mechanism behind it, we focus on the gold standard, PNF assisted stretching.
When you do a static stretch, you get some temporary length in the muscles you can reach but those muscles that sit deep and are compressed and irritated, are not being decompressed by a stretch. They are being pulled on from the outside.
The other issue is the stretch reflex. Your nervous system has a protective mechanism that detects when a muscle is being taken towards its end range and contracts it to prevent injury. When you hold a static stretch, that reflex is engaged within the first few seconds. Your body is resisting the stretch at the same time you are trying to apply it. You get to a point and the body holds you there. It will not let you go further.
This is why you can stretch every day and still feel exactly as tight the following morning.
You are not getting past the stretch reflex. You are not reaching the deep structures of the muscle and you are not changing anything at a neurological level, which is where the holding pattern is actually being maintained.
