Llanfairfechan Crown Green Bowling Club played the annual Clive Llewellyn Memorial Shield against Bethesda last week. Last year with home advantage Bethesda won the trophy back from Llanfair, after Llanfair had held it for the previous two years. This year Llanfair had home advantage and were determined to win the shield back. In the first half of the match, Bethesda started strongly with control in two of the four games, Llanfair up in one and the other game very tight. By the time the games were over, Bethesda had won three of the four, but spirited fight backs had kept the games close, with the doubles just losing on the last end, luckily for Llanfair, an excellent win by Richard Collier 21-9, meant despite losing in games 3-1, Llanfair only trailed by 5 points 67-72. After lunch the second half of the match began. Llanfair started well and were in command in three of the four matches, Martin Taylor was the first to finish his match, taking a very good 21-14 win, giving Llanfair a slender 2 point lead, Bethesda weren’t done though, they started fighting back and two of the games were very tight again, the doubles pair John Short and Rhian Hughes came off with a commanding 21-11 win, and put Llanfair on the brink of a win, the lead extended to 12 points. The two remaining games were eventually won by Llanfair, David Dickinson winning 21-16 and Barry Taylor 21-18, which made the winning margin 20 points, 151-131 Llanfairfechan winning back the shield.
Clive Llewellyn’s wife Georgina Hollas was present to support both teams her late husband played for, and kindly presented the Clive Llewellyn Shield to winning team captain Margaret Davies. A great day of bowling, and lovely annual get together in Clive’s memory.
